do you think that i could build a pair of wings...like out of thick leather or something...that would give enough lift to enable me to fly? it would be hell on my arms....maybe i could make it have assisted opening like on a pocket knife...

Hey , maybe is not such a bad idea after all. In fact you an see a lot of athletes who can do a lot of things with their hands like would be their legs. So , after a good training you may be able to do lifting on your own arms to your whole body weight.
For this to be applied than to flying it would require a wing device made from a soft cloth (maybe synthetic) same as the parachutes have, and a duraluminium body frame to stretch that light cloth (leather would make this too heavy) and be able to flex in certain points, exactly like bird's wings. It needs a little math to calculate the weight/ wing surface ratio to see actually how large the wings must be.

Just don't be let influenced by some who say that's impossible, you can never know before you try. Some of the failures didn't happen just because it had design failure, but because the ones who try it out didn't took in sight their own powers (on this device you're actually on your own).

All the big discoveries were made by trying and improving the design or the manufacturing issues, where leaks were present

Good luck and godspeed

Sure you could, but not in the way you think. Your arms are not strong enough to flap wings like a bird. But you could build a wing that would let you glide and use your arms and legs to make the 'glider' move forward and thus fly. You would need a very light structure and a very efficient method of converting your body energy into a force to push you forward. This has been done several times. The first person to fly like this across the English Channel won a large prize.

Check on Icarus's web site. He was he first guy to try that.

Look at biology books that talk about how birds fly and notice that they have hollow bones to minimize their body weight and powerful chest muscles to move their wings. If your body is not built that way you are not going to succeed.

you are no engineer, you know it is all calculation...how do you think your arms can support you weight 1st of all, maybe you need to go find out how many times you have to flap your arms to support your weight mass....sorry you need to just jump on a plane and get your adrenaline pumping that way..the way you are talking is just crazy,,,,,

Sure!. ====== And yes you can do it, its possible. Just convince yourself about all the technical aspects and take good advice. Use safety device too. Measure your capability and use safety factor of 1.3 (Here I recommend 5)

TIP: Put one safety device too. == _||_

The wings will not collapse upwards due to your failure to 'fly' them. Even if it not works out, you just can glide easily!

your arms just don't have enough strength to support your weight. It's been tried many times and never worked.

It's already been tried, hundreds of times. Buy a hang glider. They DO work.
