I'm doing an assignment on snail bait poisoning ive got basic knowledge of what to do in a first aid situation but any other input would help id like more infomation on what first aid can be done b4 the animal is taken into the vet clinic, what can be used to induce vommiting other than hydrogen peroxide or ipecac and what the vet might do when the animal is taken in. ive given a vet clinic a call to ask for infomation but as they we're busy i thought id ask her for any inputs from people that could help while i wait for them to give me a call back.
Thanks for any answers given.

Basically the best course of action is to get the animal to a vet as soon as possible...if you are close to the vet clinic, better just to head there immediately.
An owner should not be advised to induce vomiting...among other things, snail bail (usually metaldehyde) can cause seizures which means that if the animal also starts to vomit, there is a risk of it inhaling its vomit and ending up with pneumonia.
Once at the vets, they may give something like apomorphine an an emetic (if within about an hour of eating the bait), and may also give activated charcoal- this absorbs the toxin and helps to eliminate it from the body.
Often gastic lavage is needed- this involved placing a stomach tube and gently infusing water/saline and sucking it out again. It may also be necessary for the vet to intubate the dog and ventilate it.
One of the biggest problems of metaldehyde poisoning is seizures, which can be so severe as to cause brain damage. This is controlled with drugs like diazepam (valium) or phenobarbital. They also require IV fluids and fairly intensive nursing.
Hope that helps- please email me if you want.

When a dog or cat ingests snail bait you DO NOT induce vomiting. You should always call your vet first and have the box of snail bait in hand to let the vet know what the main active ingredient is because depending on the ingedient will depend on the treatment. The vet will call poison control and give them the info on the size of the pet and what the snail bait was and how long ago it was ingested. Then poison control will let the vet know if inducing vomiting or not will help. some poisons you can't induce vominting, it will make things worse.
Vets will put the dog on IV fluids, do the necessary blood work if needed. snail bait it one of the worst things for a pet to ingest. email me if you need more info. good luck

You have covered a lot. Um snail bait not sure most edible pest poisons though should be made to throw up unless it were something corrosive like draino or any other substance that might burn the throat. The Vet would actually give charcoal if anything, for any bait poisons usually the vet will induce vomitting and put on iv intravenous fluids to flush the liver and kidneys . Rat poison is a big one that you should immediately induce vomitting. Rat poison essentially makes them hemorrage or bleed out inside and shut down liver and/or kidneys as well. Any poisoning you should seek your Vet or an emergancy clinic immediately. It's better to be safe than sorry..

it's okay normally if a pet eats snail bait, since it's designed to dry the snails out. so it doesn't work on rainy days. however, the animal may be extremely dehydrated, so give it plenty of water, although take care not to let it drink too much at once, since it can expand the stomach too quickly, especially if there is food in the stomach already.
to make the animal throw up, get a jar of mustard. mix it with water. then open the animal's mouth and pour the mixture down.

I thought I answered this question? Anyhow, you'd do best to phone your vet and ask him about this - presumably when he treated your dogs, he knew one was in whelp? And I'd be as concerned about the effect on unborn puppies from the treatment, as from the poison itself to be honest. I seriously doubt there are many people on YA who will have been unfortunate enough to have experience of this specific event. Oh I see you are reposting - just to say if you don't like answers, just ignore, and move on to the next.

well first you want to give the snail mouth to mouth. then rub it gently keeping it calm, we don't want it to get stressed out. now rush it to the human hospital, they do a better job and your insurance is sure to cover it (all human doctors start on snails)
hope that answers your question.
