Put flour on the tip and hold it there with your finger for awhile... if you dont have corn starch.
Also, for future reference, go to the pet store and get some Kwik stop or something similiar in case it happens again.

Don't panic! Use a bit of flour, cornstarch, baking soda, or baking powder. Someone mentioned red pepper--unless you want to torture your dog, don't use that!
Press a bit of whatever you've got onto the nail. It may take several applications to get the bleeding to stop. Take a cotton ball, tissue, etc. and apply pressure to the nail. Don't worry, the bleeding looks a lot worse than it is. It just makes a heck of a mess.
When you get a chance, get some styptic powder (one brand name is Quik-Stop) which works especially well.
And don't let this stop you from trimming your dog's nails! It takes a little practice since every dog is different. Just give him/her a yummy treat and lots of praise and they'll forget all about it.
Good luck!

Ok, first of all stop panicing. Next, find a bar of soap. Take the bar of soap and press the nail into it. This will stop the bleeding. Don't let the dog lick the soap off of his nail, though. After a few minutes of the soap being on the nail, wipe it off with a napkin. If it continues to bleed, try again or wrap it in gauze with a triple antibiotic ointment on it and apply pressure. DON'T put alcohol on it, it will only sting and cause the dog pain.

Cream of Tarter is the same as steptic powder, it should stop it almost immediately. In the future (yes don't let this keep you from trimming nails) keep the container of Cream of Tarter with your nippers and always remember if nails are dark where you can't see the vein just take a little bit on a regular basis and you'll have short nails in no time. Oh-Cream of Tarter is found in the spice section of the grocery store usually used for helping to beat egg whites for meringue.

pack it with talc or flour if you do not have a styptic powder of some kind. Hold your pet and don't let him move around a lot. You may be in for a long night. Stay with your pet as moving around will start it bleeding again.
It is important that you remain calm as your pet will quickly pick up on your fear and become excited him/herself raising it's heart rate pumping more blood. Be calm, sit with your pet. stay with it.
DO NOT USE BAKING SODA!!! Red pepper works and it is not torture. It is not like it burns their toe like it does our tongue.
Purchase a small jar of styptic powder from a pet shop and never attempt this again without it. Safety first!
If bleeding does not stop you will need a vet. But flour starch, will help stop the bleeding. Try clipping shorter cuts more often.
Aluminum Sulfate is the active ingredient in styptic powder.

Unless it it spurting blood, it will be okay. You just nipped the vein in the nail, happens to the best of us. The vein will retract and should clot normally. If you want to do something to contain the blood stains (and make you feel better), and your dog will let you, you can always take a paper towel and hold it on the nail for a minute or two, but it really will stop.

I am assuming that you don't have any styptic powder so dab a little flour on the nail. That should help.
Oh and be careful next time. I am also assuming that your dog has black nails. look underneath the nail and you should see a groove. The part that is indented is the dead part of the nail. The spot where the indentation ends is the quick. Don't cut that.

not really an emergency. Use some flour or baking soda and pack it on the bleeding nail. Won't be long and it will stop. Keep some styptic powder on hand from now on

We did that to one of our dogs, tried for the longest to get it to stop, flour, pressure, ice. Finally I thought about just buying some new skin liquid bandage and tried that and it worked. If you don't have that and tried all the other things and can't get it stopped, go to the vet.

Corn starch and pressure will stop the bleeding. Don't worry, it is not life threatening. The bleeding will stop.
