I am 29, I could get my own place but I choose to stay with my family basically because my twenty year old brother is literally crazy and I want to be near him to try to talk him down. You can't force someone to get help but I feel I am the only one in my family that can get him to listen to some reason. However I am worried this might hurt my chances in dating someone, so my question is will this situation be a detriment to my chances with someone. I want to leave but I feel I need to stay around until he feels better.

Your reasons for staying home are commendable on the surface. But it also leaves me wondering about what you are getting out of being at home as well. Could you be slowing down the process of your brother getting help because you are always there to "talk him down"? Are you really helping your family by not moving on to the next chapter in your life or do you really feel safer at home where you feel you are needed? Please don't misunderstand I am not trying to dismiss your brother's trouble or diminish your decision to stay home...but I think there's a bit more to it than maybe you realize and it's something you might want to think about or talk to your parents about.

I think you already know that the situation does/will affect any relationship you would like to build with a lady. And you know you need to resolve it in someway....

Mental illness is nothing to joke about and is very hard to cope with and live with on a daily basis. I hope your family and brother all get the help they need to live a "normal" life. Best wishes....

You have to be there for you family no matter what....yeah it's kind of a turn off when we ask you where you live and you still say moms and dads but then again that's where you want someone who will understand your situation. In another light it shows that you value the important people in your life and are willing to make sacrifices for them and that you are dedicated. Any woman would definitely be able appreciate that.

I think it's cool that you are so family oriented. Alot of women do. If you explain this to your date that you are only staying with you family because you need to help your brother. Some women may not not knowing if you are still going to be like that if the relationship sticks and if you are going to move out.

Have you thought of the possiblity of moving out and taking him with you? Then you don't live at your parents but you can still help him.

THE SOONER YOU REALIZE THAT YOU HAVE TO LIVE YOUR LIFE TO SUIT YOU AND NOT EVRYONE ELSE THE BETTER OFF YOU WILL BE. I WENT THROUGH OBSTACLES THAT PUT ME IN THE SAME SITUATION BUT WHEN I BECAME FREE, I WAS HAPPY,AND ALOT BETTER OFF.
