I was on prozac for 2 months or so. I didnt notice myself gaining weight at all.. Most mental health drugs have those "common side effects", and weight gain is usually not one of them. But everyone is different so is our bodies. Everyone responds differently to different medications.

How is the med working out for your depression? Personally i wouldnt mind gaining a few pounds if the med is really showing positive effects

I've never taken Prozac, but I did take Paxil which is also an SSRI and I was taking it for about eh 3-4 years maybe. I had gained around 50lbs on it. Just about all medicines will have the changes in weight which can be either negative or positive. And the same with the increased/decreased appetite. I've been through so many meds. but Paxil was the worst, and after I was pulled off of it I had mentioned about Prozac and my psychologist wouldn't do it. Not sure if there's a link there or not.

But if your unhappy with the weight gain, there are other medicines out there. Normally whoever your seeing would have the best advice on it though.

i'm currently taking zoloft and had the same problem. i gained about 10 pounds over the course of 5 months.

stopping the medication was not an option for me b/c my depression is so bad that i need it. but i started cutting back on my calorie and fat intake each day (1200 calories max) and exercising at least 30 mins a day and i've lost all the weight and have kept it off!!

i also feel alot happier with the combination of the medication and the exercise-being out in the fresh air is great. give it a try-it might help you too

I had the opposite problem, but my doctor cited "weight gain" as a more typical side effect. You should look up Prozac online and it will list the side-effects.

My mom was on Prozac for years and she gained weight and couldn't get it off. She tried so many different work outs and diets, but nothing helped. I forget what she just got switched to but I hope it helps her.

I can't speak for everyone 'obviously'. But I've been on prozac for year's, & have the opposite problem to you. I can't keep weight on.I've also heard in the past that it's given to obese people to help them loose weight. Maybe you should check with your doctor.
