I previously asked if I could buy life insurance for my 70 year old mother with diabetis. What I actually need to know is if I can buy it without her knowing it, to pay for funeral costs and such. I don't want it left up to the state of Nebraska to decide how my mother leaves this earth. I wouldn't be able to come up with the money all at once, hence a life insurance policy to help cover expenses.

In most states, the insured (your mother) must be notified if someone wants to insure her. Base on her age, I would just get a $20,000 life policy to cover her expenses. There shouldn't be any medical tests for such a small policy.

At the same time, I would strongly advise that your mother do a will if she haven't already.

You should certainly inform her, but the policy can be taken out on her. If you call a funeral home, they will be able to help you set up the pre-arrangements. They usually offer life insurance that is specifically for burial purposes. They are actually a very safe, intelligent way to handle things, so my advice would be to call a funeral home. The policies usually offers payment plans. Good luck and take care!

Also-most policies that are for burial purposes do not require a medical exam.

no. Well, perhaps if you have power of atty then you can do that.

What you are talking about is a prepaid funeral, which is close enough to life insurance that most states require funeral home directors to be licenced in life insurance. If that is your sole issue (the funeral) then I'd go funeral shopping, find one that you can afford that is dignified, and start working on payments.

No, this isn't tacky. Funeral costs can vary from $400 to $40,000, depending on what you want and the sheer guts of a funeral home to ask for higher prices.

No. First, your mother would need to take a medical exam (blood, urine, etc.) And second, it may be difficult, not to mention very expensive, to get coverage on your mother at 70 years old, especially if she has diabetes so it may not even be worth it to you.
