We recently bought a DVD-HD Recorder but it's not compatible with the older 5.1 surround sound system that we have. The new recorder uses the single cable optical sound standard whereas the 5.1 system uses the coaxial standard with a lead for each channel.

The manual for the DVD-Recorder says that you can get a converter but I haven't had any luck finding one.

Does anyone know where I can get one?

The system you are referring to as using the "coaxial standard with a lead for each channel" is not using Coax at all. Digital Coax is also a single, digital connection. What you are referring to is 6 Channel analog, so you need a Dolby decoder OR a DVD player that has the 6 channel output.

These are available, but you will probably have to buy one online. The creative DDTS-100 is one such item to give you a start.

agb... did you spot the great disclaimer on that device: "significant word! This device won't decode 5.a million-channel alerts. it is going to basically convert 2-channel digital stereo (PCM) enter alerts to analog stereo output. this won't artwork with TVs that basically output 5.a million-channel digital alerts!" This wont artwork for him. guy - to procure a crappy Sony embody sound gadget that may not settle for 5.a million from any device. We hate those structures for merely the reason you have got here upon - loss of connections. Take it lower back. get a greater robust gadget that accepts the two 5.a million from optical or coaxial-digital. (Optical is lots greater undemanding). different than that - there is merely no longer something you're able to try this does no longer cost greater effective than changing that crappy "theater" gadget. Sorry - yet thats what you get for the lower priced.
