I am interested in pursuing a career in Musical Theater. I would like to go to NYU, because you're in the city-which is an easy way to get introduced to casting directors, producers etc.

I looked at NYU's website and Saw they had Acting, Drama and Music Theatre. What is the difference of all which should I do? I would be interested in Voice performance too. But there really isn't a "musical theater" program-at least I don't think!

If you want to be in musical theatre, major in music theatre. The majors are exactly what they sound like--acting is theatre without music emphasis, musical theatre is acting and singing.

Do what sounds the most interesting to you. Make sure you read the curriculums and all of the pertinent information for each major.

NYU is very difficult to get into and very expensive, especially if you're out of state. Good luck!

I looked at the site and apparently they don't allow undergrads to major in Acting. As an undergrad, you major in Drama. That will prepare you for a Master's in Acting.

Musical theatre really is like a triple major. You'll focus on acting, dancing, and singing. You shouldn't try to double major if you choose that one. It seems to me that a lot of people who are either serious actors or serious dancers and who have (often) just a bit of singing talent choose this field. There is an actual Music Theatre program (click on Music Performance and then Academics):

Vocal performance is going to take you in a more classical direction. Think Disney movies & Broadway musicals vs. opera when trying to discern between Music Theatre and Vocal Performance. If you aren't interested in dancing at all, then major in Drama and perhaps minor in Vocal Performance. You can always change to a double major later if you discover you're committed to singing. Once you commit to a major in Vocal Performance, though, you'll probably be forced to minor in Piano. Something to keep in mind.

Also, remember that you don't have to major in something in order to study it...you could major in Drama and then take inexpensive music lessons from grad or advanced undergrad students on the side.

I answered this Q, vaguely in your other Q. I also offer that I'll accept that you contact me. I am an NYU alum, and even when I attended,,, 40 plus years ago, they were an explemplary Unviversity, and remain so today.

Your FOCUS needs to be more narrowly defined perhaps? At least initially. Certainly "VOICE PERFORMANCE" must be offered globally, or very specifically outside of NYU
