It really depends on the competition. About 5-12 years ago, it was mostly done by band size. Now I've been noticing most competitions are basing divisions on school size. I am an assistant marching band director.

When my daughter was in marching band, they competed against schools that were the same size. It's the same as the way they classify schools into leagues for sports.

In Oklahoma, it's based on school size...usually if the school is small, the band is small, and if the school is big, then the band is big...

It is usually based on the number of students in the school. But the number breakdowns vary.
