Parakeets (aka budgies) are a very easy going species of bird. They're hyper, love to play and although they chatter all day, they won't annoy your neighbors. They're not the type of bird that loves to be touched and they're not the cuddliest of creatures. They will, however, hang around you, sit on your shoulder and nibble your cheeks, preen your hair - they Love your company even if they're not hand tame! The best budgies to get are hand fed, but breeders that hand fed their babies are very hard to find. Budgies can plant a good bite when mad, but it's not super bad. It's like getting pinched and most budgies don't bite that hard. They're said to be easy to tame but I've never had the patience. Despite their size they can be very destructive. I've heard of a cage of two budgies literally stripping the wallpaper off a kitchen wall while their owners were gone for the day! I lost a bulletin board to one of my hens who is aptly named buzzsaw ^.^ .

Lovebirds are completely different! They're one of the most aggressive parrots available and you have to handle them every day to keep them sweet. They love to be cuddled though and will dive into your shirt while you're at the computer or watching TV. They're well known for their need to shred. Nothing made of paper is safe. I've heard many stories of people reading a newspaper and magazine, only to turn a page and see their lovebird tearing strips out of the back of the book and stuffing it into their rump feathers. They have lots of attitude and will share it with you whether you want it or not. Their voice is high and shrill though many people don't find it that bad.

Lovebirds have a very painful bite. They will lacerate your flesh and hang on like a small dog. Actually, they've been nicknamed feathered pit bulls because of their aggressive nature. Lovebirds, if you have one, should be kept as a single bird as when they bond to another bird they become very mean. Lovebirds will attack each other and have been known to bite off toes of other lovebirds in the home. Lovebirds get their name from their habit of sitting next to each other and cuddling. A person in my parrot club said they should be called Dragonbirds instead because of their crotchety moods and painful bites. Despite this many people love their little 'monsters' and wouldn't give them up for the world!

Love birds are not as friendly or willing to perch on your shoulder or be petted. I think they are one of the worst parrot pets, but I am CERTAIN there are plenty of people who would disagree with me. Parakeets - budgies - can be really nice pets, but you have to buy one that is not agressive. A new bird can be timid but not agressive and quick to attack or bite.
