why do dogs bark so much during sirens?

My dog goes crazy whenever an ambulance/police siren goes off. He starts barking and howling very loudly and gets noticeably riled up. Why is this? Is this really common?

This is probably because dogs can hear much higher up on the sound scale then humans can. He may be bothered by the sound in his ears, or it may just make him excited because of the unexpected noise. If the howling is a major problem then you can firmly tell Dog "no" and distract him by playing with him. It is a really common problem, if it can be called that, in dogs, and mine does this also. Dogs have very sinsative ears and the sirens hurt their ears also dogs can hear very high pitched noises really easy but when it doesn't just sound and go off it starts to hurt their ears so they get excited and bark and howl. My dogs also howls at the door bell because of the high pitched noise if it goes off over and over. It is more common than you would think. I hope this helps!

Maybe for the same reasons they bark at high pitched music.
Dogs ears are more senstive so the dog hears them louder than you do. Maybe he's just "chiming" in.

Most dogs do that because they think its an inturder. My dogs do the same things sometimes. Some dogs also do that because it can hert there eardrum.
