I think the main purpose of religions is that sometimes people need hope and they need to believe that there is something greater out there so that that greater being can guide them through life.

Religion is to fill a spiritual need that we as humans were created with. This spiritual need is unique to humans.
My religion follows the bible's theme, God's Kingdom. The purpose of my religion is to form a personal relationship with God and then to do our best to live life according to his requirements.

The Psalmist said, I was glad when we went into the
house of the Lord. Why? to worship the King of Kings,
to sing praises to His name, to be with people of like
precious faith, to feed your spiritual life, to read and learn
the truths in the Bible, to take our children to learn about
Jesus, to give our tithe so the church can continue to
flourish, to get away from "worldly" things. These are some
of the main reasons and I'm sure other Christians can think
of more.

the purpose is supposed to be the same with all religions. unfortunatley, not too many practice what they preach. all the religions ive heard about have the same goal in one way or another. the problem is they cant seem to leave the others alone. i think its kinda sorry when you have to band together just to reinforce your beliefs.

The purpose of one's belief system is to answer questions that really have no answers, to make a person's life have meaning even when there is no other meaning than to live. Religion makes you feel "ok" about your place in the world.
I believe in a good nite's sleep and a poop after breakfast.

To serve God and spread his word to others. However, I don't think God wants his word forced upon others. What I mean is, I don't think his son Jesus Christ if were present on Earth today - I doubt he'd be a Mormon forcing his teachings and practically invading peoples homes at dinner time.

i thin the main purpose of any structurized religion is to brain wash people into believing in what they preach and then coercing money out of the brain washed masses to finance the creator of the groups fancy life style.

I don't have a religion.
As for the purpose of others: rule the masses with an iron fist by instilling fear into their minds.
