I would think they would have rabies, or some other deadly disease. Florida (O)possums are extremely ugly, and I fail to see how ANYONE would want to eat one of those. They look like a cross between a sewer rat, a porcupine and a diseased kitten. I wouldn't so much as want to touch one, much less eat one.

I've eaten deep fried gator tail and rooster, and they both taste like chicken. But I would NEVER think of eating possum

Well actually I live in Alabama and yes my dad used to scare the b-jezzes out of me when he would catch an opossum, have it in the back of the truck and tell me I had a prize in the back of his truck-- I would go running to see my prize jump on the back of the truck and there it would be a hissing opossum. He would catch them and take them to a buddy so he could EAT it :( I mean GROSS! yes some people really do eat these.....

I've lived in Western NC for about 6 years and I've never heard such a thing! The most exotic thing I've heard about people eating here was pig brains.

First off I congratulate you on saying "some" Southerners. While some did and probably still do (My dad jokes about it but sometimes I really think he did) not all fall in that category.

When I was way younger, I had an uncle that lived out in the country, and I was out there and he liked to eat them. I tried it one time, and they are very nasty.. I will never forget that greasy taste...
