it should have a positive connotation considering it stands for a group of people who supposedly live their lives to a higher standard trying to better themselves by following prophetic and inspired counsel.
However, I'll admit lately people have become quite cynical of religion. With reason. The notion, "religion is for suckers" has become the new religion. Sadly far too many self proclaimed Holy and sainted people are living a facad, saying one thing but living another in secret.
But on the flipside - - There are still many countless faithful who are actually trying to better themselves and do mean what they say.

In my mind, "religion" has extremely positive connotations. I love to study all the religions, as I see them as various ways which the human being has created for living the human life with meaning and value. There are many ways to live a human life. The religions are ways of life. And I think they can all be beautiful and full of worth.
However, some people from time to time do abuse religion of course. But this is usually the fault of a few people, and not a whole religion in general.

The eccentric value of something is always positive, from my understanding. We all know that if a polar equation has eccentricity of e=1, the conic section is a parabola, if e>1, it is a hyperbola, and if e<1, it is an ellipse. The closest you can get to giving the eccentric value a negative value is in the case of e=0, and since e=0<1, the graph is an ellipse, but this is a special ellipse, and the result is a circle.

It's negative because of what some people have done in the name of religion.

I don't know what you're talking about. I guess it depends on how you use religion. If you do charity and good works in the name of religion, then it's positive. If you bomb people and kill them because you say God wants you to (that's just BS by the way), then its negative.

Many of my fellow evangelicals do not like to refer to our faith as "religion" - which leaves a lot of people confused! What they mean, of course, is that our confidence is not in institutionalized religion, it is more a relationship with God. Necessary organizaation in worship is secondary. However according to the present day meaning of religion, that is religion also.
The Bible says: "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world" (James 1:27). I like that definition of religion.
