my friends black lab tried to retrieve a goose when he was about 7 months old, and the goose was not dead...of course the goose beat the hell out of him..the dog is a couple years old now and will not go near any downed duck or goose that isn't dead...any way to break the dog of this fear?...

time sent and retreaving pratice with froozen and dead ducks geeses any any type u want the dog to retrive go back to the basics and your dog should be fine i would not hunt him till your confened that the dog will perform the way u want and dont get mad at the dog if it just retrive it your self and let the dog have it let him learn that the brid is nothing to be afriad of

my grandpas dog has the same problem... he downed a squirell.. and it wasnt dead it scratched him bad... now he's scared to retrieve... my grandpa has one of those dummies to throw and he glued feathers on it to get that realistic scent.. the dog retrieves that pretty good now and kinda retrieves..
try that out
