it all depends where im hunting..if im hunting the woods of ny i prefer the 30-30 winchester with a 170 grain bullet, its a nice gun 6 shot, easier to manuever in tight corners and dosent have a whole lot of kick to it....if im hunting the fields and open areas, i prefer a 243...lighter bullet and there is nothing to deflect the bullet in open range. try that in the woods and the smallest branch will deflect that bullet into hornebecks back yard

Hunted the past 12 years with a Browining lever action 7mm08 and have no desire to change guns. Shoots flatter than a lot of deer guns and does not have excessive recoil. I have dropped 90% of the deer I have killed with it in their tracks and others rarely move more than 30 yards. The absolute answer though is that the "Best deer gun" is the one you are most comfortable with and can hit with.

i like the 308 cal.i hunt with a Winchester lever action model 88 and have shot over a 100 deer with it in past 40 yrs.most any 243cal up will kill a deer, shot placement is the most important thing.i aim just behind the shoulder, lung shots waste almost no meat, and they usually drop with in feet of where standing.

Depends on type of deer, terrain, weather, local regulations, marksmanship ability, finance, comfort level, and many other variables. That's like asking what vehical is best to drive!

I like a 7mm mag. But shot placement is more important.
