This is really just a stereotype - it is not a "must have" food. Many Americans I know wouldn't be caught dead eating a hamburger. It's like street food everywhere else - fast, hot, and not entirely healthy - maybe the kind of thing people crave when they're drunk. Working class comfort food. I'm not above it at all, but I wouldn't call it "must have" and I know many people who never eat them and find them disgusting.
Also like street foods of other countries, some people do it right and others (like McDonald's) do it less right, generating something revolting - a thin, whitish, steamed bit of cardboard which is hot and bland enough that some people will accept it.
That's not the real thing. Get fresh beef and grill it with some veggies over fire, like at a barbecue, then you understand better (assuming you like meat). It is essentially soft grilled beef, so people like them for more or less the same reason people like meatballs, kofta, steaks, etc. A hamburger done properly is similar to all these. That other stuff - forget about it, nobody with sense eats that stuff. American or not.

Our fondness for beef and it is quick to make. Plus, it can be eaten on the go. We do not spend as much time as Europeans do dining together. We are married to our cars and vehicles and hamburgers are easy to order at the drive through window, and we can eat our food without ever getting out of the car. We do pay a price in heart disease and obesity, however, for our compulsion.

There is nothing better than a big hamburger with tomato, onion, and miracle whip! Throw some baked beans, and chips on a plate and you have a great meal! Wash it all down with a ice cold Pepsi! AAHHH!! I think hamburgers are easy to make and you can put so many different things on them to change the taste that people can never get sick of them!

A good hamburger is wonderful to pick up with your hands and sink your teeth into. I like mine with a toasted onion roll, lots of mayo, catsup, pickles, crunchy lettuce and thinly sliced red onions. Melt some jack cheese on the burger that was covered in bbq sauce on a grill, throw on a little thick sliced bacon....Ohhhh...Mmm....making me hungry for a burger! Burgers rock!

It is comfort food, nutritious, filling and tasteful . I just had a patty melt ,my favorite hamburger sandwich yesterday.
A patty melt is grilled rye bread with a hamburger topped with grilled onions ,peppers and cheese..it is the best.

We don't like hamburgers...we like cheeseburgers! And it is a convenience food when you are on the go. And it tastes good.
