Of these free anti-virus programs, which is best? Can anyone give me some feedback on their personal experience with any (or all) of them?

Is there a significant difference between the best of these free programs versus programs such as Norton or McAfee?

Go with the ratings. Visit http://www.cnet.com and search for any of them in the REVIEWS section. Then hit the COMPARE button.

But I say THERE IS NO BEST. Here's why.

I use Norton... it's good. If everyone used Norton, then a new Virus could KILL us all. But if we use different anti-virus solutions, then a new virus won't WHACK us all. It just makes good sense. But check the reviews. Norton is usually rated high. McAfee is usually a bit lower. Some of the FREE solutions are not listed at the ratings, but other articles and experiences show that they are pretty good.

Good luck and BE SAFE

I have used almost all of these so here is my feedback

AVG: Fast and light on system resources. Low detection rate.

Avast: A little slower, uses more system resources. Higher detection rate. Includes a boot scanner that can remove viruses before windows loads.

AntiVir: Fast and light on system resources. Updates download slowly. Supposedly has a higher detection rate than Avast. Doesn't always start when you turn on your system. Glitchy.

Norton and Mcafee are both HUGE drains on system resources. They will slow your computer to a crawl.

McAfee: has a horrible detection rate and often can't remove the viruses it finds. Installs bloatware (security center) that constantly tells you your computer isn't safe since you don't own every McAfee product ever made.

Norton: Higher detection rate then any of the free antiviruses. Updates download slowly. Some viruses are designed specifically to attack Norton and can cripple your system. Norton forces itself into every part of your system so even uninstalling it may cripple your computer.

I use AVG..I used Avast! and it told me that I had like 50 viruses when I didn't have any..so I guess just don't go with avast!, stick with AVG.
