Just ask if anyone wants more...it's usually normal to take it home with you, but I'd never call it abnormal to leave it. You're safe either way.

If there are left overs after a pot luck, I always ask the hostess if she would like what is left in my dish before taking it home. It would be an act of kindness to take your dish home so the hostess doesn't have to wash and return it to you.

If you are leaving early , no you can't take your food. If you need to take your container you need to leave the food. It is very boorish to take your food back but you can fix a dish with some of the other things there to snack on later (and only if the party is now breaking up.)

I think you take your dish/food home. The hostess doesn't want to clean it up. If the party isn't over but everyone is finished eating there should be no harm in taking the items you brought home.

If the party is not over when they leave, they should leave what they brought and retrieve the container later. If the party's over, ask the host if they would like any more and if not take it home.

Yes,they should leave the food. Unless the host/hostess begs you to take food home, because they will end up throwing it away otherwise. Otherwise, you'll look like a real cheapskate.

Whenever we have a potluck, all the extra food goes home with whoever wants it. Everyone just kinda makes a plate of what they'll want to eat later and takes it.

you are supposed to take your container of food with the left over food home to discard the unconsumed food. You may leave the food IF you ask the host if your food may be put into another container.

At potlucks I've always seen people ask if anybody wants more and then wrap their dishes up and takes it with them.

The hostess shouldn't have to deal with the mess and dishes afterwards.

Should have made a buffet plate to go. I'm sure the hosts would like to have some leftovers for themselves, they did host the party.
