When I was 11, I pulled my first all-nighter. I went home and slept ALL day. Well, when i woke up I guess you could say, my eyes were open, and I could hear everything around me, but I couldnt breathe or move. Like I would try to and my body wouldnt even attempt to breathe OR MOVE. I was so scared. I was in panic yelling in my head. It was scary. So now every so often (like 4 or 5 times a year-maybe less) The SAME thing happens, and scares the hell out of me. It usually only happens when I sleep in the daytime...but it has happened in the morning. I get very scared.. but I calm down and then finally my body gets the signal I guess and I can breathe and move. It happened yesterday so... I am getting worried. I know this is a long question.. but I need help! What's wrong with me?

Sleep Paralysis is a natural bodily function that causes us to be paralyzed during sleep. It prevents us hurting ourselves or others during dreams. It's when it follows us into the waking state that it becomes a disorder.

Some causes of "sleep paralysis" are: stress, sleeping on back, narcolepsy, depression.

Good luck with finding the answer to this and let me know! I have a similar sleeping disorder where I experience seizures in twiglight every 5-6 years.

this is exactly what happened to me and i thought maybe i was crazy and everyone who i ever mentioned it to said that i was just dreaming. the first time it happened to me i was also young. i opened my eyes and i could hear my sister talking on the phone in the other room when i tried to move my body would not respond,I tried to yell for help but nothing came out. it was like a huge weight was on my body holding me down. finally and all of a sudden it was like the weight was lifted. it has happened again but not to often. it usually happens to me when i am falling asleep and am very tired. and it's funny i can always feel it coming and i start to move around so that it won't immobilize me. I think what is happening is that you mind wakes up shortly before your body does.
during R.E.M sleep everyones body is paralized and breathing become shallow. so your body is probably making a slow recovery from R.E.M sleep.
