but if you dont believe in a god and it turns out that it is real, then woe unto you?

how many of you think that that is baloney? do you think that a god would punish people for choosing not to believe due to lack of evidence? why give people a choice in the first place, if there really is only one choice?

in my opinion, if there really is a god, then that god wont punish me just because i didnt believe.

of course, this kind of thinking sounds very bad to those who believe they will go to heaven. i mean, i bet they are thinking... "here i am, i believe in a god that i think is the only true god, and i know im going to go to heaven because i believe in my god, and yet, here are these non-believers who think they will get to go to heaven too. thats not right! they should suffer! they should be punished for not believing like i do! i say, no, they dont get to go to heaven, only i do!"

it just seems to me, though, that the choice to choose is more important.

I believe Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and no one gets to heaven without him; however, there is more to say about that.

God did all the work of salvation...paying a heavy personal price...we don't have to do a darn thing to be forgivien our huge lifetime of sin (except have the natural consequences for them, but not eternal ones)...he did it all---this is a pretty good deal for us..all we have to do is ONE thing..just like all Adam had to do was one thing and that one thing is the thing you are not willing to do and that is have faith in that which one cannot prove. ..to take that essential leap of faith into the unknown..

Our one thing needed, our part in salvation, is to believe. There is a penalty for sin and one either let's Jesus take it or they accept the pay for sin which is death (eternally) on their own shoulders...forsaking Christ's willingness to shoulder it for us out of love for us. He doesn't leave us a middle ground.

If you were in jail and someone wanted to pay your bail, but you refused to aceept it, the money/gift would not be able to help you. So, too, is it like that with going to heaven. He is unhappy that you refuse to accept the bail or take the free pass to heaven, but he will not force it on you as He did give you free will to reject Him if you wanted.

You're thinking that Jesus thinks like you said Christians do(at the end of your question) and that is wrong ..for He told the parable of the workers who worked all day (Christians who are lifelong in this example) and giving the same pay to those working only an hour (the so far unbeleiver or new believer)...he says the workers didn't think it was fair but God pointed to his own generosity and said it is His gift to give to who he pleases. He said he wants noone to perish but tells us some do.

However, there may be a possibility, He has another thing He hasn't told us..another way to save uinbelievers...unbelieving still when they die......for He never changes and in the past, He opened the door to gentiles from the chosen people- the jews..something they never saw coming but that God did out of love for those people (the lost Gentiles) they never saw it coming..so, too, may He have a secret plan for saving the uinbelievers after death..perhaps showing them the truth and facts and letting them then decide or something.but He may not do this...so you may pay a heavy privce for your stubborn insistence that you are right..I am sure many people will tell Him he is unfair at judgement but He says every man will be proved a liar and God's truth will win.."though every man be called a liar" He willpatiently show us why we are wrong and why he is right and in the end we will have to agree.

Your are taking a risk but who on earth can change a mind that is made up..very few can but sometimes life can and God working through the events of life..

I only suggest it is as possibilty and believe whatever He does will be right because He has more knowledge than I do. Although I can think of a lot of scenarios when I might think He is worng or unfair or something, I also know He would be able to explain why he isn't even though it may not seen so nowe and even though we all have doubts some times or wonder if we made the right chioce spiritually,

He does give a choice on earth and we can chose not to believe..but there may be consequences of our choice..there were for many people in the bible starting with Adam and Eve..

You are confusing belief in God with belief in "God of the Gaps". If the world provided evidence for God's existence it would be an imperfect creation and detract from the capacity to exercise free will. As it happens, i don't believe in the Big Bang but the reason for that is that it was thought up by someone who was a theist as an explanation. I find the prospect of eternal life horrifying. The Bible tells us that the dead are conscious of nothing, not that Heaven or Hell exist. Hell could be argued to be a mistranslation for the concept "grave". The point of religion, really, is to make people better people, less selfish. I would say the cause of WW2 was the Treaty of Versailles, WW1 and the imperial powers squabbling in Europe in the nineteenth century and before. When they were united under Christendom before the Reformation, there were plenty of wars between Christian monarchs and nations, but these were to some extent moderated by the Papal concept of a "just war". Antisemitism is antagonistic to true religion.

Yeah, I have a problem with this line of reasoning too. I mean, I suppose there's no harm in accepting God in the hopes of getting into heaven. But if I'm only doing it "just in case," then it's not real faith, is it? So I won't go to heaven anyway. I don't really believe; I'm just trying to cover my ***.

Also, I can't hedge my bets with all religions at once. Sure, Christianity tells me to believe in Christ. But Islam tells me to believe in Allah. I'm sure there are other religions that say I have to believe in whatever they teach in order to get into heaven. Why would God insist that I have to believe in Him to get into heaven, but then not differentiate His "true" message from all the false ones? That seems horribly unfair to me.

Pascals Gambit.

You just waste 1/7+ of your time ans 1/10+ of your income. Have at it.

Eri is talking about "Homer's Wager/Gambit" But marge, what if we are worshiping the wrong god and the real god is just getting madder and madder?

And as far as the proof for god, there is more evidence against a god.

It's baloney because it ignores the other alternative: what if you believe in a god, but you've picked the wrong one? Or if it turns out that believing in a god is what gets you condemned to hell?

The believers who think this is a good argument seem to have willfully ignored those alternatives. It's a really shoddy argument.

You know what? Living by Bible principles leads to happier lives in general, whether you really believe in God or not. You'd say "I have the freedom to do whatever I want." Good for you.

By following the Bible I'm free from unwanted pregnancy, STD's, many types of cancer caused by smoking, brain damage from drug use, liver problems from over drinking, and many other things.

I don't believe that non-believers should suffer when they die. The Bible doesn't say that either. Fiery hell is not a Bible teaching, it's a scare tactic used by false Christianity. Non-believers will simply be dead. Non-existent, permanently asleep. That's what death is as taught by the Bible.

To answer your other question:
Would you rather be a mindless automaton than have free will?

first off if God is real and the Bible is his true word. Then 99.9999999999999999......% Of people on earth and ones that have already died is not going to heaven. Second ask youself this how can you have free will, If there are eternal strings attached that you have no ability to change after you die.

That's Pascal's wager. Look it up on Wikipedia.

This assumes there is only one god. What about the other 10,000 or so? What if you pick the wrong one and wasted your time and money? How could you worship them all?
