My cat who is about 5 yrs old and I have had him since he was born, he has been litter box trained the whole time and does not go outside never has, His box is the same as it always has been and it is in the bathroom where its always been, and if its clean or dirty he will sometimes go on the rug next to his box. He doesnt do it all the time just like once a week or so maybe. We have tried to correct this by rubbing his nose in it and putting him in his box. nothing is working any suggestions?

Is he pooping or peeing outside it?????? IF he is peeing outside it, he could have the start of a urinary tract infection and should be seen by a vet. Even if he is doing both, that can still be the problem.
Rubbing the nose in it does NOT work, so stop doing it!!!!!!!!!!

Well think about it. When you were a baby and you weren't potty trained did your parents rub your nose in your accidents and stick you in the potty? Just something to think about. Anyways, it upsets him when you rub his nose in his urine and feces. That might be one reason. It just upsets him and he gets mad at you and does it all over again. Another reason is you stick him in his litter box when he does not need to go and he does not understand why. Have you ever thought about that? And the last reason I can think of is that maybe he is feeling uncomfortable about a change in the environment even if it is not in the bathroom or the litter box there might be something he doesn't like in the house that you just bought. Did you get another pet to make him jealous? Did you buy a new lamp? Couch? Scratching Post? Think about this and maybe try removing new things one by one for about a week at a time. Then whatever thing you figures out upsets him then remove it and sell it. And about buying rugs, that might be what is upsetting him. Get rid of all the rugs in the bathroom for a little while. I hope this helps you!

1) DO NOT RUB HIS NOSE IN IT. he doesn't have the mental capacity to figure out what you are trying to tell him.
2)Take him to the vet. Ensure that he has no infection, inflammation, etc. either internally or in his paws.
3) Change the location of the box as well as the litter. Perhaps it has begun to irritate his feet.
4) Remove the carpet. Leave bare floor around the box (you could always put something right under the box but not if it projects).
5)Clean the box every day.
Don't forget to get input from your vet.

Same problem, found out is was a batch of the litter that had been reformulated, and one of mine did not like the smell/feel of it, so was using the bathtub (go figure). Have a back up litter that I use and changed out to that till the next shipment came in. Later found out it was a mislabeled on the manufacturer bins, was supposed to be in a "crystal" blend, not the tidy cat (prefer the red lid, does not smell as fast and cats like it better). Could be that the manufacturer changed formulas, and he is trying to tell you he is really not that fond of it. Try another litter, replace the box (could be a smell issue if the box is older) and have lots of patients, but would call the vet, could be something, but maby not, better safe than sorry and good luck!

This is very typical age for male cats to develop urinary tract problems and infection or crystals must be ruled out to eliminate that cause of inappropriate urination.
One of the causes of the urinary problem can be stress in the home so look to that issue also. Another is a diet of only dry food which concentrates the urine heavily (no cat drinks enough water to compensate for it) and can cause pain or a highly alkaline urine.
So you need to rule out any medical issue your guy has going on the then you can look into the purely behavioral things.

Take kitty to vet in order to determine if it is a behaviour or medical problem, vet will want to do a urinalysis. Might have a urinary tract infection or crystals in his urine. Don't rub nose in it or anything, it doesn't help. Don't punish him for being a cat. If cat experiences pain when peeing, he goes somewhere else because he associates pain with the litterbox.
Feeding kitty a high quality food found at petstore helps to prevent UTI, feeding a little canned food mixed with water, warmed in microwave for few secs will help kitty get extra water in him which can help.

I agree with cleaning the area really well and trying the Nature's Miracle. Rubbing the cat's nose in it won't help at all. I think the idea that it's an infection is very possible and I recommend getting your cat to the vet asap. The cat wants to please you, there is some type of disturbance going on. Hope this helps!

Never punish or yell at your cat for not using his litter box; that only makes things worse. He might have a damn good reason for doing this and rubbing his face in it will make him mad. Maybe he's mad at you for something you do once a week or so?
this website has great articles on litterbox problems and what to do, it's a step in the right direction

buy natures miracle from petco to clean the areas he has used, as the smell of the old urine can attract them to reuse that spot. offer multiple litter boxes and keep them clean all the time. cats dont do good with punishment they are not like dogs, sometimes you can use a squirt bottle on stream and squirt them with water but only if you catch them in the act.. try using a different brand of litter.

This sounds like worms. Take him to see the vet. When a cat has worms, it messes with him causing him to do that.
