My Golden Retreiver has hurt her tail somehow and won't let me touch it to see what is wrong. She is walking around with her tail between her legs instead of holding it up like normal. If I I try to grab it and take a look she cries. So did she break a bone or something? Whats the remedy?

I'm not sure if it is bones or cartilage, but the tail IS connected to her spine! I had a similar problem with my Lab. She was also holding her tail down, crying and her entire body was shaking. The Vet said that she had sprained her tail. She was given an injection - pain killer - in her behind, which left her tail just kind of hanging. We were given pain tabs and anti inflammatory tabs for her. In about 2 days she was back to normal!

Yes, a dogs tail has lots of bones in it. They're very small and VERY fragile, which is partially why dogs sleep with their tails curled around them. I've also heard that when a dog tries to take control of a pack, the current pack leader will bite the other's tail ASAP, so that the other can't fight as efficiently, and that's why when dogs are scorned, they run away with their tail between their legs. I don't know if it's true, but it seems to make sense to me.

Yes, dogs DO have bones in their tail. You shouldn't try to help your dog yourself, though. You need to take her to the vet and let THEM see what's wrong. Do you know she really hurt her tail, or is that just a guess because of how her tail is positioned? If a dog's tail is positioned between the legs, they might be mad, scared, annoyed, etc. so it could be many things.
So see the vet no matter what and let them see what is wrong for you.
Good luck!!!

From the time a pup is born there is no bone ,or feeling in its' tail until it reaches 6 days old,but if your dog is older than this, the answer is "YES" it has a bone in its' tail, this is why all pups that have tail docks should have the docking within the first 6 days of life,or surgery is required for docking.

Dogs just like cats have vertebrae that start at the base of their skull and continue down to the tip of their tail. Yes you should take your dog to the vet, if it goes untreated you dog could end up having to have the tail amputated. My Golden retriever was abused by her previous owner and wouldn't let us touch her tail for years. We had it checked by the vet bit it was simply a sensitivity issue... better safe than sorry.

Dogs do not have bones in there tails but they do have muscles either your dog has a bug bite or something that is bothering her or she probably hurt her muscles. My black lab has had both of those happen to her tail and that's exactly what she did till we brought her to the vet. For the bug bite the vet gave us anti-biotics but for the muscle the vet just told us to wait it out and it worked out.

There are bones in a tail. They are called the Caudal Vertebrae. That is why it is dangerous to tug a dog by its tail. Advise your friend to end the practice of tying the tail. If he persists, call animal control.

Yes, it is like an extension of the spine. Take it to the vet. Not an emergency where you should go to vet tonight, but I would take it tomorrow.
