Buy a VHS cassette cleaner. Its a cassette that comes with a bottle of cleaning fluid. put a drop or two in (follow the directions on how to do this), slap it in the machine for about 2- seconds. Depending on how dirty it is you may have to run it through 3 times but the first time should be sufficient.
I have in times past, used Rubbing alchohol on a Q-Tip and carefully rubbed the VHS player's head clean. I f you use thgis method WAIT about a minute before you plug in a Tape.

Yes, you can buy a head cleaning tape for VHS.
This type of Recorder/Player is far from outdated.
Lots of TV Stations use VHS Cameras, especially when
Vans are Taping an Event on the road. Look for them
in Protests, etc. They are large, but I have one and it
is superior to Camcorders.
I also have Beta machines. And Hi 8, and VHS Compact.
I use them all. I have hundreds of tapes of Family as the kids grew up. Everything has a place in my System.
I do transfer back and forth and Burn CDs too.

Places like Radio shack and Walgreens still sell head cleaners for VCR's. Those are the most effective ways to do it. You pour the solution, which is usually a form of rubbing alcohol, into the hole and insert the head cleaner which looks like a vhs tape into the player. Press play and it does the rest by itself. You may have to do it more than once. I clean mine at least once a month.

The easiest way is to buy a head cleaning cassette at any electronics store. Follow the directions -- just put it in the vcr and run it for a few seconds.
If you're ambitious, buy head cleaner fluid and sponge swabs at the same electronics store, open up your vcr, put the fluid on the swab, hold it lightly against the heads and slowly turn them. You can also use this opportunity to blast out all the dust and junk from inside your vcr with a canister of compressed air.

I know Radio Shack used to sell a cleaner for just that. I'm not sure if the still do. You could, however, get something called acetone. Put some on a qtip and wipe the heads clean with it.

Cotton swabs with rubbing alcohol is a good start. They used to sell tape head cleaners that operated like a tape with a cleaning solution, but I think they are probably too abrasive and may not be sold that much anymore anyway.

The head itself is fine. The tape guides are probably mis-adjusted.
