If a person knows more than you does that necessarily make them smarter than you?

Can your learning potential out-way that of someone who knows more than you now?

Think of it this way, a 20 gig hard drive is full to the max, it holds a lot of information...

But, a 40 gig hard drive, that holds only 10 gig's of information, still has the potential to hold more information...

I am having trouble expressing my question from thought to words, but you get the idea right?

Well I don't know if this helps - I have met people that were super book smart but had no common sense. I have also met people that were book smart but had no street smarts. I honestly don't think that certain people are smarter than other people. They just know more things about certain subjects that other people may not know about.

first question-inferiority comes first to your mind and superiority, but dont stick to that shelves, believing your own that you are smarter than them, maybe he/she knows something from the topic but you know more in some topics., thats equality. no such individual have the capacity without the capacity and knowhow, like the ability of others, thats equality again., you cant count the potentials of a person, every individual person has its own potentials in some areas.,if 40 gigs had/hold full informations, faster so with the 20 gigs take note shortened info but accurate and a little slow., (same as the 40 gigs.(has info in detail)and accurate also., accuracy are in both gigs hard drive, i knew it because i have a computer rentals.

The dictionary defines "smart" as:

4 a : mentally alert : BRIGHT b : KNOWLEDGEABLE c : SHREWD

and "intelligent" as:

1 a : having or indicating a high or satisfactory degree of intelligence and mental capacity b : revealing or reflecting good judgment or sound thought : SKILLFUL
2 a : possessing intelligence b : guided or directed by intellect : RATIONAL

The third link offers a comparison of the two:

"Intelligence" is a property of mind that encompasses many related mental abilities, such as the capacities to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend ideas and language, and learn. In common parlance, the term "smart," metaphorically used is frequently the synonym of situational and behavioral (i.e. observed and context dependent) intelligence.

Therefore, it stands to reason that a smart person can hold a degree of intelligence but by intellectual reasoning, not be smarter than another of higher intelligence quotient.

Oh, absolutely!

A person can be "book smart" but still be absolutely clueless when it comes to the realities of life.

You can learn facts but not have the ability to tie the facts together to get an overall sense of the whole.

You can learn to read words long before you have a good ability for reading comprehension.

Your hard drive illustration is a little weak -- because humans have pretty equal capabilities among themselves. But being "intelligent" means you know HOW to know something. Being "smart" simply can mean that you know fact trivia. You can be both, but you can also be one OR the other.

Yes I think so. To me being smart is knowing knowledge/facts but being intelligent is knowing how to use them or having the ability to think deep. Ror instance I think a smart person might know that y=mx+b but an intelligent person actually understands why y=mx+b and can there fore use it to solve other problems or relate it to life. Whats the use of knowing y=mx+b if you have no idea what the point of it is. Thats just an explanation I just randomly came up with haha.

I understand what you're saying haha its kinda complicated for me to explain it.

Yeah, I think I know what your getting at. Consider savants. Or maybe even people who have autisim. They may be mentally retarded but super intelligent in a certain area, like Rain Man. That movie was based on a real person. He can memorize a entire symphony aftr hearing it once. Super intellignet in some areas, yet needs help getting dressed every day. WOW.

I know quite a few people who are smarter than I and who retain a lot of information but are as DUMB as a Rock they have (BOOK SMARTS) but do not have a clue how to tie a Half hitch or a square knot I guess what I am trying to say is they aren't street smart

It is "outweigh", but back to youir question...

I know people with a college education that don't have sense enough to cross the street alone. The is a clear example of what you are talking about. There are people with exttremely high IQs ( a measure of intelligence) that are social idiots. Can't hold a job, maintain a relationship, interact with others. They are "stupid" intellects.

There's book smart vs. street smarts or just plain old common sense. I've known many book smart people who have no street smarts, or even common sense.
