We have them because we are opaque and standing between the light source and something else on which we cast the shadow. The shadow can be a metaphor for darkness, which is in turn a metaphor for being unsighted and unknowing.

they are a reaction to the light around us
if we stand in the way of that light it will darken the area in front

that's our dark side or can be called ego devil or satan negative energy yang andying balance of polarities negative side its feminine left and right brain hemisphere or is lack of light
