Hi, I have just found that in a corner of an old microwave oven I am "inheriting" there is an area of rust and actually the inside "painting" has fallen there.
I am a little concerned that it may somehow "leak" the microwaves there, and planning to replace it asap.
However, just to reduce my ignorance on these devices, does anybody know if this is actually dangerous and how the shielding works?
Thank you very much.

i think that there is a shield for the microwave transmitter - the microwave energy will not be as efficient if there is a hole in the cooking chamber as the energy bounces about the chamber and agitates the food - right now the rust may absorb some of the energy and it may take longer for the food to cook but if you see it sparking inside turn it off and gte a new microwave - if you are shaky about the microwave get a new one if you can afford it.

I should Get a new one, I had a microwave which was al little rusty, and it set fire to itself. :(
Metal is conductive and will get hot very quickly, including your microwaves case, if the shielding is peeling off in inside!!

yes... this can be very dangerous.
i too used to own a rusty microwave & used it often until 1 day i heard crackling noises coming from it and to my dismay i noticed sparks through the see-thru door and smoke coming out of the back... my ready meal was ruined.

It isn't a good sign, I would go and get a new one soon.
