In a Poll last month of 1,010 adults, majorities said Americans are ready to elect a female (61%), a black (58%) or a Jewish (55%) president, but only 14% would elect an atheist.

Every president of the US has been a white male protestant (except Kennedy - a white male catholic). Atheists and agnostics have consistently had to vote for christian candidates.
Would you, as a believer, vote for an atheist candidate if they had policies you could support on key issues like education, health and security?
If not - why not?

I certainly would. I make judgements based on what the candidate wants to do rather than the candidate's etnicity or religion.
Unfortunately, these days we aren't presented with much choice, are we?

Both Bushs' are catholic even then If some presidents are protestant why seek to communicate with the pope for answers. I think he'd be the last guy I'd ask for an answer their country doesn't even have a good structured government. But they have enough money to pull this government together should our government collapse. But I bet that would cost our country a price for religious freedom. Which will soon come to an end. I don't vote but if I did I wouldn't vote an atheist anyways. If I felt that an atheist choice is a bad one could his choices be any better?

Yes I would. As a matter of fact if given the choice between an atheist whose platform I didn't completely agree with and an evangelical christian whose platform I was ambivalent about, I would vote for the atheist. The reason being, an atheist is much more likely a critical thinker than an evangelical. An evangelical would seek guidance from a supernatural force whereas an atheist would be much more likely to use his rational mind and the reasoned opinion of advisors.
Oh and to wildflowerneu, you are so ignorant.

I would vote for them only if their opponent wasn't a Christian or didn't have policies that I support. As the poll shows, every President except Kennedy has been a Christian. The Lord inspires us to vote for people that will obey Him, and work on making the U.S.A. and the world a better place.
Right now many of you are thinking, "Huh! Whatever! I didn't vote for Bush or Clinton, or Reagan! God doesn't inspire everyone!" He does speak to everyone by putting different thoughts into our minds though. It's just a matter of us deciding to choose to do those things. Everyone has a free will. The Lord didn't want to create robots that automatically obeyed and loved Him. He wants children to make their own decisions and truly love Him.

I would vote for an Atheist, if they were the best candidate. I would argue that many of the presidents labelled as "protestant" were in fact basically secular humanists, but I suppose it's semantics. These days I would vote for an Atheist before I would vote for a right wing conservative Christian, or any other religious extremist.

No .. I would not. If they did not believe in the existence of God (let alone have a relationship with Him) then I have no proof that they would have the same beliefs that I do. And that is what voting is all about - trying to get someone into office that supports your beliefs.

I would not. I'm Canadian.
If I was an American voter I would vote for a candidate most likely to govern for the people instead of for big business.

Yes! I would because I would also feel secure in knowing an atheist would support seperation of church and state (very important to those of us of minority faith), and that (s)he would not be supporting extremist religious groups like the religious right.
