Do you think that our elderly should be sent to a Hospice or we should care for them at home?

What are the Pro's and the con's? What does your religion or belief system says about this?

as a nurse I think both
somtimes because the person needs 24/7 Technicle care and familys just cant do that.
but somtimes because familys have disowned there older family
which I am sure that you will agree is shameful.
it is the whole familys responsability to look after the elderly It honours God to do so somthing that happens little in the west
the bible sais "Honour thy father and mother that it may go well with the" I dont suppose you will disagree with that

Hospice is reserved for those who have 6 months or less to live. There are others who suffer from long term health problems. Some can be kept at home-provided there is someone who can tend to them. Some can not be cared for at home. This is a complex situation and a simple answer is not available.
We cared for my dad for about 3 years, but he became much too difficult for one or two people to handle. He has been in a Veterans center for about 1 year now. All is good.
Not everyone is eligible for a Vet benefits.
Caring for the elderly can be real expensive to the tune of $1500 to $15,000 per month, depending on the specific needs. If you do not have the money to pay, then you will not get the service you need. I recommend all families look into long term insurance-it can save your life. Some of the elderly are blessed with good health right up to the day they die-not everyone is that fortunate.

The authorization for Hospice Care comes from a physician.
Usually, the patient is determined to have less than 3 months left to remain alive.
Hospice patients are terminally ill, and the terminus is closing fast.

Honestly, I think that a person who cannot care for themselves should die. There is a certain point where quality of life becomes more important that living, and at that point, let the poor person go.

My great grandma, for example, is over a hundred, her mind is not all there, she doesn't even remember her own children all the time, has to be checked on every hour of the day, and it's a huge burden on the family -- I'm glad I live in another state because I would not be willing to help with this. She has no quality of life, her body just doesn't seem to want to stop, as far as I'm concerned, she should not be placing this burden on her family or society. This isn't fair to do to her, she has no quality in her life, and it isn't fair to the family, because their quality is suffering because of it. My great grandma should be allowed to die with dignity, not forced to keep living as a near-mindless shell of who she once was.

this is only my personal belief
but i often think about this
and have decided that if better care can be given in a hospice and they can make the person more comfortable than i could with pain relief etc
then it has to be the best thing
i know this will make a lot of people feel guilty if they ever had to make this decision
but you have to do what is best all round ... especially if you have family to care for as well as sick loved ones xx

I think that if at all possible the elderly should be taken care of in their home. I know that some problems prevent that though but, I think the best thing I ever did for my Dad was enable him to stay at home. He had Parkinson's disease and some pretty bad orthopedic problems. He was catheterized and he need a Hoyer lift because he could not walk. He was totally nursing home material but, I wanted him to be able to eat (with his swallowing problems it was marginal, but at least he could a little) what he wanted to eat when he wanted to eat it and I wanted him to be able to do what he wanted to do when he wanted to do it, like watching t.v. or even little things we take for granted like going poop when he wanted to go and not when they had time to deal with it. Anyway, he stayed home with 24 hour care and lived 9 years. He was ready to go when he finally passed on but he did it when he was ready -- not because he felt no one loved him and he was a burden. You get absolutely no financial help though trying to care for a parent like this. When we were all done he had no money left and his house was into the bank $100,000.00 worth. We wouldn't have done it any other way though.

At a certain point they should be taken to a nice hospice, and in fact I have a neighbor who I wish I could take to one. I do love her but she's getting sicker and sicker and requires home care.

ISLAM SAYS CARE FOR THEM AT HOME....
our parents cared for us when we were small.. so how the hel can we put them in old homes when they need us..
they gave us love (atleast mine did) .. gave us money.. gave us education.. gave us morals.. n then when they need us.. we shud care for them too the way they did for us!!

in the Quran ,.... there has come many times to care for ur parents... it has also *** in the Quran .. not to even say a word of anguish infront of them...

one of the companions of the prophet who lived outside of Medina n HADNT seen prophet once wanted to see him.. but he had an old mother at his home.. since it wud have taken him days to reach medina .. the Prophet did NOT allow him to leave his old mother alone....
