If I'm feeling fancy, from corner to corner diagonally. Usually horizontally, for practicality's sake.

I do not even cut the bread. I just eat the sandwich as a whole. When I was very small, though, I would cut the bread right down the middle.

Corner to corner! It makes for a better presentation. Even in quarters with frilly toothpicks and an olive. It makes a nice platter and really pretty.
I even cut grilled cheeses that way!
