Call and ask them what the proper dress is. Sometimes a jacket and tie are required. Typically, a jacket and tie are fine anywhere. If, when you arrive, you find yourself a bit overdressed you can lose the tie. Trust me its better to call than to be stopped at the door without a tie.

Well most places in New Orleans don't have a jacket requirement. But, a nice shirt with a tie and pressed slacks are a standard in any fine dinning restaurant. If a restaurant has jacket requirements, they sometimes have "lender" jackets at the coat check. Just call ahead of time and find out there dress code.

New Orleans is very casual (especially in the aftermath of Katrina) even in the fine restaurants. Usually, a nice shirt and pants are fine for a man. You can call the restaurant and inquire if they have a dress code. Some of my favorite restaurants in New Orleans: Antoine's, Bacco, Galatoire's, Commander's Palace just opened again. Tourism in NOLA has suffered so much: I think the folks in New Orleans are just glad to welcome you the their city.

Might as well go with a coat and tie, you'll look classy. Or if you want to do real old-style, go for the seersucker suit or white linen suit during the summertime.

I would ask the restaurant first, but you can never go wrong with jacket and tie.
