Can anyone give me a site on what a family tree is? I need information for a bibliography. I don't really need info on how to make one just yet....I just need info about it in general like how it would help me find my family's country of origin. I know my question is kind of confusing....sorrry! Any help is good just don't send me to one ogf those sites where u have to download something or buy software. If u don't have an answer to my question then PLEASE just don't answer it cuz i don't want to waste my time reading sarcastic remarks. Thank u for any helpu can give!

A family tree is a list. Sometimes it is in the shape of a tree, sometimes not. To make one in the shape of a tree, you would put your name at the bottom of a sheet of paper, with your birth date and place. Then you would draw two lines a couple of inches upwards, one to the right, one to the left. You would put your fathers name, birth date, birth place on the end of the left-hand line and the same for your mother on the right.

Next you draw two lines from your mother and two from your father, and fill in your grandparents. Repeat for great grandparents. That is usually all you have space for. It is a 4-generation family tree. It doesn't "help" you find your family's country of origin. You either know it and fill it in for each person or you don't.

If 3 of your 8 great-grandparents were born in Scotland and the other 5 were born in Germany, you would be 3/8 Scot and 5/8 German. Most people in the USA have some ancestors who are recent immigrants and some who have been here longer, so it is almost never as easy as that.

Excellent question LaLa!

I often visit http://www.ancestry.com/

My grandmother and I started working on our genealogy when she was diagnosed with cancer. It's been a fun project and.. incredibly interesting as well.

Surf around this site. I hope it is as helpful to you.

God Bless.
