There are many different kinds of photographer. Which area are you interested in? Fashion, glamour, portraiture, journalism, science, nature, travel ... and so on.
Before you even THINK about it, realise that there are thousands of similarly-minded people out there and the competition is huge.
First, ask yourself some more questions -
Are you able to produce photographs that will impress NOW. Regardless of the quality of your camera (I have to assume that you have one!). Know that it is very easy to convince yourself that your photography is wonderful but will your shots impress anyone with talent, who will recognise good work. The only way you will find out is by showing your work, presented well, to the right people. HERE is not the place.
Books? Can be useful IF you already have an eye to see and be inspired.
Cameras? Doesn't matter. A cheap digital can produce fabulous work with the right eye behind it.
Types of photography? Covered that above but know that each branch is very specialised and will take a LONG time for anyone beginning to become established UNLESS the results are fabulous and are shown to the right people.
Either way, becoming a photographer can be taught. I find that an evening school is a waste of time and money. There are far faster ways and the BEST way is to befriend an existing experienced photographer and volunteer to be an assistant. Pick up the rules of the game from that best source of knowledge.
If you are serious about learning the basics of photography (NOT the technical side), just see my e-mail and contact me. I will help you.

Hello, I am 17th year advertising photograper named Havriliak . Advice: forget anything you have ever seen, been influenced by, and look at the area of work you to wish be in , as you have never seen it before .Create images that have no restrictions , rules or technical boundries. Technology , Economics, and most of all stock photo resources have forever defined what Being a photographer means. Be willing to not sleep , Hear stupid insulting comments , And Most importantly always............. as crazy as it may sound: always Establish in as respectful and dignified way: You Have the control of you deciding if job is intresting enough for You to think consider doing. If you cannot Feel and create CREATE emotional response from your work, I.E Good, Bad ,Sad or whatever it is that You Feel then don"t torture yourself by "Trying" "BECAUSE" in the world of photograpy exist about 90% Clueless , Ignorant Decision Makers who decide who they GIVE the project to .Most beleive anyone can take a picture, as well as STOCK images Destroying the Value of " THE PHOTOGRAPHER . an image from a stock agency may cost perhaps : $50-$2500, THE Few photographers who get the job are paid $12,000-$50,000. Your sense, and look of image cannot Exist or resemble anything that is good or great. What it must establish is Only YOU can be the source of creating the Image that They all will take the credit for. My answer may not be what you want to hear but being a photographer and being paid $25,000 ,has to be earned via Hard work and Belief.

Chose a digital SLR - the best you can aford (at least $ 1,200) w/ manual settings. You may not know how to use at first, but you'll grow into it. Digital save you $$ in purchasing film & getting negatives developed. 4x6 prints are like .22 per.
