4.0 ohv AWD just cleaned the MAF and everything was fine,then....the howling began right at the sensor.I took apart the shroud with it running and it sounds like its somehow causing the noise.Could it be further up?

It is the Idle Air Control valve. The IAC has a valve inside that will flutter and make this kind of noise. If you have someone to idle the motor up inside while you unhook the two wire connector and it quits making the noise then that is your problem. Seen this many times.

As everyone says, the Idle speed control valve is making the hoot sound you described.. you can try to clean it, but usualy it winds up in replacement to permanently take care of the noise

Idle control valve,right on top of the throttle body. That's where the loud humming or vacuum cleaner sound is from.
