I ask this because the other day I was at the theater and a women just kept a steady glance at me for at least half a minute. It made me so uncomfortable so I stared right back at her. When she noticed me staring back, she then glanced away... People can be very rude sometimes with this...

P.S. The lady was standing right beside me at about a two feet distance while we were waiting in line for the ladies room. Made me really self conscious. Made me check myself in the mirror a couple of times to make sure all was in place !!!

Staring at all is rude. A quick glance and maybe some eye contact with a smile is okay. Anything beyond that is rude or a little creepy.

I don't think there's a maximum time;-) If the person you're staring at looks uncomfortable and looks away, then it's time to stop staring, Also, if the person gets annoyed and walks over and asks you, "So what's up? I've got egg on my face, or do I look like Brad Pitt?"
That's when you stop staring and say, "Oh!I wasn't staring at you, was staring at those lovely trees behind you."
You never know what might develop from that!;-)

There is no time limit for staring.. as long as it is done not too obviously. Just don't let the person feel uncomfortable.
If you're caught, just smile and look away slowly.
Oh. make sure you stare at their eyes.
Scanning at other body areas should be considered rude :)

I can't believe this is your question. A simple glance would be fine. Staring for any length of time makes the other person and even your self uncomfortable. If your that interested in them introduce your self.

Maybe because she noticed you staring at her she was starting at you too. So it was both of you's fault. Not just her's. She obviously noticed you starting at her also.
But for me I just hate it when people stare all together. I think that if its more then a look like more then 5 seconds that is considered staring. There are other thing's to look at besides people.

I am flat out reprimanding when people stare at me, even kids~"What are YOU staring at?" I don't care, I sincerely dislike it, it makes me feel self-conscious. Less than 10 seconds do I tolerate it. Sometimes people talk to me, "You look familiar?" "Do I know you?" "Let me ask you a question?blah blah blah" Sure I have no problem talking to strangers, conversing with people who recognize me, or think I'm someone else "Oh no, I just have one of those faces!" But to just blatantly stare drives me to my breaking point. I don't say anything mean, just let them know (sternly) STOP STARIN AT ME OR I AM GOING TO FREAK OUT!
