On average a dog has 2 heat cycles a year and can get pregnant during both heat cycles. For the females health, you should only breed her every other year. If you are thinking of the health of the female and her pups, you should not breed her for the first time until she is 2 years old. You should also get the required tests and OFA certifications, as well as all of vaccines for the parents and wellness exams for the pups.

A dog should never be bred under the age of 2. Before being considered for breeding they need to have and pass health testing (not just simple vet exams), they also need an impeccable pedigree and to have either been shown or evaluated to see if they are of breed standard and worthy to be bred.
A dog comes in heat twice a year as a rule but should NOT be bred more then once a year.

I am a breeder. You should never breed a small dog before it's second heat . Most larger dogs are even 3 to 4 heat cycles. I would say 1, closer to 2 years old. Never breed them more then every other heat. I had heard heats 5 to 10 months apart.

you CAN breed them twice a year but this is very hard on their bodies and ultimately shortens their lifespan...
you CAN start at 1 year
you however should NEVER breed any dog who isnt registered and hasnt gone to dog shows to prove they are an excellent example of the breedy WORTHY of passing on their genetics.. and been vet checked for breeding soundness
EVERY breeding is a risk to both the male and female.. to the male there are sexually transmitted diseases... which also are a problem in females plus to the female there are addittional problems/risks of pregnancies...
unfixed animals have more health risks.. ask your self do you love your dog?? or is your dog a money making machine?? if you love your dog you wouldnt breed it...
if you want to be a responsible breeder you will note that reputable breeders invest ALOT of money into their dogs before breeding so are not actually making a profit..
the ones who make money are the ones who breed low quality pups and charge more than the pups are worth.. they ultimately dont care about their dogs or the pups.. they care about cash

if you need to ask you dont need to breed!!!!! PLEASE!!!! dont be another backyard breeder...the shelters and rescues are FULL of animals that started out just like the litters you are planning......are your dogs registered?are they free of genetic health problems known to their breed?are they examples of the breed standard?if you dont know or dont care then dont breed!!!!! are you willing to take back a puppy in a year or two if the owner can no longer keep it??? a responsible breeder can answer yes to all of the above!!!please think about this.....dont contribute to the overpopulation !!!!!

The sad fact is once a puppy or kitten is past its cuteness; or a pet displays behaviors we do not know how to deal with, many pets are discarded like old newspapers. On average 100,000 cats and dogs and puppies are listed on www.petfinder.com, daily. The National Council reports it on Pet Population Study and Policy, from the 5000 or so US agencies who responded to the survey, that over 2 million dogs enter shelters annually. Of those 27% are relinquished by owners, 42% are turned in by animal control, 31 by other sources, of these dogs, 56% are euthanized.
