I would stay up all night. I work from 7pm- to 7am 2 times a week at the hospital and it isn't so bad! I think you will live! Anyway, your dad is more important than sleep. Also, I think rock stars work better than red bull just to let you know!

1- Set an alarm for 3:45 am AND 4:00am.
2- As soon as possible, cut out all the noise, tv, etc. Get some perspective on things, try meditating, prayer or whatever floats your boat, but do it in the darkest room you can find. Breathe slow and easy, listen to radio fuzz (serious) or calming music. Close your eyes, and concentrate on contracting each muscle in your body one by one, from your feet to your scalp.
3- If you feel tired/sleepy/restful, stay quiet for as long as possible. Everytime you feel a distracting thought, choose a word that makes you feel calm and say it over and over again ("blue" works for me).
4- If you DON'T feel sleepy, etc., get up and try to stay as understimulated as possible, meaning no caffiene, no excess sugar, watch calming tv (like Disney or HGTV or something, but NO NEWS!). Sip water. Jot down stuff on paper, like grogery lists, things to do, monthly budget.
5- With the 3:45 alarm, get up immediately. Drink red bull or coffee, and eat some carbs, low-fat protein (like tuna) or nuts (if you're not allergic). Do a couple jumping jacks if you can.
6- With the 4am alarm, take a shower. Eat a solid breakfast. Welcome the challenge ahead of you!

The red bulls will definatly keep you up. But it is more healthy for you to get some sleep. Try if you can. But if not then drink a few red bulls and just find something to occupy your time. Invest in reading a book or playing a video game. Anything to keep you alert and to help pass the time. If your in school then use this time to catch up in your studies. Keep yourself busy and that should help pass the time. I hope this helps :D

I would go to bed around 10:00 and if not sleepy at least let my body rest and get up around 2 or so. Yes, take some caffeinated drinks with you. Do you drink coffee? Coffee would be good. Also take something with you to occupy your time...surgical waiting rooms are boring and stressful. You will need some busy work (ie a book, crossword puzzles, music and headphones). etc. I hope all works out for your dad.

Lay down. Don't drink the red bull. You'll probably want to sve it for the morning. All red bull does is give you a sugar high then you crash in a while so by the time 4a.m comes you're gonna be really tired.

I'd try to get some sleep. You're going to be exhausted, waiting around at the hospital...and hospitals are not restful places. You need to conserve your energy so you can be there for your dad when he gets out of surgery. Depending on what kind of surgery he's having, he may need alot of help in the next few days or weeks. Get rest while you can!

I would try to go to sleep for a few hours now, it may be hard but if you don't then it will be really hard to stay awake all night. You are probably going to be stressed because of your dad so your body needs rest. If you do stay up all night, you should sleep as much as your body needs the next day. Good Luck to you and your dad.

Play video games, download things, drink coffee, and, most importantly...

Go to youtube and watch TV! Just watch some anime or shows you used to watch as a kid. If you don't like Bush, look up some anti bush things. You'll love YouTube. (Like the Daily Show on YouTube, or just look at the top rated films) You can have hours upon hours of fun with Youtube!

try to at least lie down in the dark and rest your eyes now.
maybe put on some relaxing low music.
set your alarm in case you do go to sleep after all.
have your cafeine hit just before you really need it - the thing is you'll have a long day, and you don't want to hit that caffeine slump (when caffeine doesn't keep you awake anymore) at noon or so.
