Since you didn't put this in the vegetarian section, I'll answer. Way way back when, there were hunters (men) and women (gatherers). Women picked fruits and berries, while the men went out and hunted animals. Nobody was a vegetarian back then, you had to eat to survive. It's a hold-over from thousands of years ago. So we still slaughter cattle and hogs. While I'm partially veggie, it's not because of cruel and inhumane treatment of animals, it just that I don't really care for some meats. People who are veggie are fine with me as long as they don't shove the "cruelty to animals" thing in my face.
I bet those buffalo those eons ago weren't killed as humanely as people do now. It's just part of the food chain. We're a higher level species.

I would think it would be okay to eat an animal you had raised, so long as you give it a fair chance to eat you.

To Chefgrill: I totally agree except the part about how they slaughter them today... today they add a whole bunch of crap to the animals we eat today AND the animals have hardly any room to room... in really bad unnatural living situations... the slaughtering places want as much money as possible instead of making it as safe and as healthy as possible =/ I just wish the free range organic stuff wasn't so darn expensive =/ Anyways have a great day =)
