Signing is taught in most UK primary schools. I have two children aged 4 and eight who can sign to each other, neither of them are deaf. Leaving me having no idea what they sign to each other over the breakfast table!
I think its an excellent idea because the next generation will all be able to sign and people will no longer be isolated by being deaf because signing will be as normal as speech.
Not so good for their parents who know their children are planing something cheeky but theres nothing that can be done to stop them unless they learn British sign language too!
Huummm a government conspiracy?

My son if deaf in his left ear and has hearing problems which will result in a hearing aid or deafness.
So I have learnt the alphabet which I found on the web. You can also find basic sayings in sign on the web, but if you want to learn the full language, you will need a course which could take up to 2 years or more.
Good luck

I am actually in the American Sign Language class, level 4 at school (it is my foreign language). Sign language is a very beautiful language, with so much more depth than people think. There is actually 4 different types that I am learning at the moment. Cued Speech (google it - it's really cool), American Sign Language (object, subject, verb grammatical structure), Signed English (initialized words in English order-- every single word is signed including is, the, and, etc.), and Pigeon Sign (ASL signs in English order).
I encourage you to learn as many signs as you possibly can. Sign languge is great. You can buy an ASL dictionary for about $8 at Barnes and Nobles. I sugggest the Random House American Sign Language dictionary.
Good luck!!! :)

I once had to learn the song "somewhere over the rainbow" for a show in sign language. I found it really interesting but never took it any further. I would love to learn more though, I really enjoyed it,
