I've been going through a depression period, and I can't seem to make myself happy. I've tried to hang out with my friends more, and do all the things that used to make me happy, but it seems to make it worse because I have to 'put on a mask' so that they don't know what's up...
I'm not sure what I can do, and it's not fun being sad all the time. So, I'm stuck pretending to be happy, but come back to my room and sit in the dark trying to forget about the world around me and everything that's ever made me sad or upset...
I am a Christian and of course look toward God as my strength, but I just can't be happy about anything besides ending up in Heaven.
Any advice at all? Thanks...

A few ideas:
1. Christians do in fact suffer from depression. It is not a sign of spiritual weakness, although it can be part of a crappy life.
2. You need to get a physical. You need to mention to your doctor what is going on. You might in fact be chemically depressed, which means that your brain isn't producing something that you need to be happy.
3. You need to work with a therapist as well. Yes, Christians do seek therapy, just like they'd use any other doctor. They will help you determine what issues might be causing you to feel this way.
4. I felt that way once, and didn't understand it at the time. I look back and say "duh." I was happy at one school, then dad got transferred, and I got dropped into a school where nothing went right for me. I kept laughing, but I felt like I was a ghost in a machine, a ghost that just kept the machine running and little else.
5. You need to examine your exercise schedule. Exercise burns off stress and depression. Your body was made by God to make ENDORHINES which are very powerful mood-altering drugs. Those endorphines are made when you're exercising, and they are very very powerful things.

I went through the same thing that you are going through now and i tried the same things that you have tried-hanging out with friends, putting on a mask, "making" myself be happy....all those things bide time but don't fix the problem. You will make yourself miserable trying to pretend to feel something that you don't feel...it will exhaust you....You said that you are a Christian, i am also.....i don't know if you pray, but i sure do and i would recommend that's what you do....pour your heart out to God, let him know that you need him....i used to beg God to let me die....i truly understand that you are feeling really bad, but things will get better...i've been on this rollercoaster ride many times....just look up and put your trust in the one who knows everything about you!! hope you feel better soon!
oh and by the way-i'm not against medicines..i took one at one time myself....they help also!! good luck to you!

There might be some other issues that are making you unhappy (school, friends, family). I would try and work on finding out what is making you happy then go back to doing the things that make you happy.
If this doesn't work, then yes, a psychiatrist may be able to see if it is chemically related too by running the necessary tests.

It might be the weather, most people tend to experience SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) around the winter months. You could try to talk to somebody, because you may actually be suffering from depression. I felt the same feelings as you did 2 years ago and I thought I was just being overemotional and nothing was wrong but I was diagnosed with depression. So possibly talk to a doctor or something and see if they can help with anything.

I don't think humans can be truly happy unless they are "shared".
I know that will catch me a lot of flak, but I truly believe that happiness only exists when you share it with others.
It does NOT have to be a BF/GF/hub?wife---it can be your kids, your parents, close friends, pets, whatever.
Having someone/something sharing life causes and doubles happiness.

You need to see a Dr. You cannot cure depression by yourself. You need to take medicine. If your arm was broken, would you try to heal it by yourself? Get help.
