Your body produces melatonin to help you sleep. You can take melatonin as a supplement, but your body will produce more naturally if you get out in the sunlight during the day. More exercise during the day may also help, so try a good walk in the sunshine every day.

If you don't already have lots of exercise as part of your daily routine you might want to try it. Even 20 minutes of fairly vigorous exercise per day (vigorous enough to get your heart rate quite elevated) can stimulate your body to release endorphins into your bloodstream, and in many people this produce a natural euphoria that can last many hours or even days. Start small and work your way up. For eg, you could start running and set yourself a goal of being able to run 5 km without stopping, and give yourself a few months to get there. This type of program has made a huge difference in the lives of many people. Be careful with "natural" herbal remedies and the like; some of these can be as dangerous as phamaceutical drugs. Your situation definitely merits seeing a doctor. A good family doctor may also be able to suggest some non-drug solutions, and you could communicate to your doctor your desire to go this route. See what the doctor recommends. Nothing says you have to take drugs a doctor prescribes for you. But for some people, medication is the only thing that works, and whatever the risk of side effects, in severe cases it may be better than the alternative - depression. For sleep, reading quietly in bed works for me. Good luck!

Valerian is often very effective. There are a number of natural remedies made from Valerian and specifically designed to help you fall asleep, so you should be able to find one pretty much anyplace that sells natural remedies.

The solution to insomnia is building up peace reserves, then you can fall alseep easily. I had horrible insomnia for five years until I looked for the best sleepers--kids--and tried to think like them. Now I have dramatically more peace reserves because I think funny much of the day and honestly have a lot more fun. I learned to think funny by collecting jokes, watching funny moves like "Shrek" often, spending time with kids (especially going out for ice cream), going to card shops and buying funny cards. Doing gags on friends. Collecting puppy pictures (that kids love). I now fall asleep in five minutes, like a kid. But the problem with this solution is our culture is so uptight and unchildlike that you have to work at it; it is not automatic.

a really hot bath, so hot it makes you dizzy then u wil have to lay down and before you know it you will be asleep, that worked wonders for me when i was suffering insomnia.
Failing that try exercise even if its just a long walk or swimming that will tire you out and get you fit.
Hope u rest soon.

Sleep.
I've had this problem a lot myself and I've tried everything. A lot of medications haven't worked out too well. Most of them them don't let you fall asleep, they force you to sleep and you wake up feeling like crap, but I find the best way that works for me is laying in bed thinking of nothing. It sounds easy, but it isn't, for an insomniac at least. Most insomniacs, such as myself, suffer from racing thoughts or worries and anxiety, so it adds to the frustration of lack of sleep.

Get underlying anxiety treated.
Benadryl. Kava kava. 5HTP. Valerian.
ADDENDUM: in response to below, although melatonin plays a key role in many mammals seasonal cycles it does NOT have any more significance in humans then the appendix.
