I have heard of naturopathic remedies for Bipolar, but you would have to seek a qualified ND for the exact ones that would work for you.

Simple answer - there are none. Bipolar disorder is a very serious mental illness and untreated has a 20-25% risk of suicide. Those are odds you do not want to play with.

There are very effective drug therapies to treat bipolar disorder, but you are strongly advised to stay away from herbals, particularly St Johns Wort, as this can send you into mania.

Oh my lord, ...

Bipolar disorder is a serious neurotransmitter induced disease. Though most people who have it refuse to admit they are sick in the end you will be VERY VERY SORRY if you don't get professional help which includes medication. Most true bipolars who go untreated end up severing themselves from friends, family as well as being broke and unemployed.

TAKE YOUR MEDS!

Yes. The most effective way to deal with bipolar, depression and cyclothymia is by attacking it at its most common cause....drug use. Stop doing drugs (most common drug is pot) and this will cause a dramatic improvement in your mood disorder. Based on my experience working with patients, a huge number of patients (if not most patients) with mood disorders are actually caused by drug use. The more serious the mood disorder, the more likely it is drugs. Depression is common. Bipolar is not, unless secondary to drug use, is the issue. Same goes with anxiety disorders and is even more prevalent in eating disorders.

Tough to say about psychotic disorders. Every single patient I worked with that had a psychotic disorder and/or a seizure disorder was a recreational drug user with no history of mental illness prior to their history of drug use. However, that is in a community mental health setting.

This is definitely not a "self-medicating" issue (that concept is just horseshit). My inpatient unit stressed detox as part of treatment and almost all patients had significant reduction of symptoms when they were forced to go without drugs.

Bipolar needs meds. It is an inbalance but left untreated is devastating to friends and family as well as the person affected.

This person should get professional help. Prescription medications when appropriate are the way to go as they are tested and have the quality controls built in to assure the prescribed amounts.
