I am a single parent and an only child. I didn't have any family members to watch my son. He has been in school (daycare) since before his first birthday. The others have a point that its good if the child can talk to tell you if something is wrong.
I worked in the same building with the first daycare and I could hear my son crying most of the day, so I knew there was something going on.
Things were fine for a while at the next center, but once he had become adjusted and we were there for a while, my son didn't want to go anymore. When I would drop him off he would hold on to my legs and just cry so I knew something was wrong.
Presently the center he goes to seems to be working out just fine. Daycare is also helping with potty training. It definitely helps when they are around other children. Seems like they learn faster.
Bottom line is that sometimes circumstances don't give you a choice. I would love to be at home with my child, but the bills have got to get paid. I think it works best when you start them at a young age so that they get used to a routine, and learn more independent behavior. Another alternative is a home health aid. They have only a couple of children to look after rather than a larger facility.

i went to nursery when i was 4, before that i was at a childminders, from the age of 1. i have have ended up a succesful young guy. I have earnt myself 13 GCSE's 3 A-levels, a degree (BSc hons) and have just landed myself a nice city job. I have noticed on the news that some experts feel that early pre-school years, can lead to induced educational development. Let kids be kids for a few years the put them into the system.
i dont claim to be an expert but this is my view.

I think if mothers have to work then maybe a good child minder is best up until they are three as this will will assure (hopefully) good one to one care in a home setting. When children become a bit more sociable at say 2 and half, three Nursery is great, as they have all the activities and little friends etc. This is only my opinion whatever other mothers have to do to get by, is best for mother and child, guilt is corrosive to happiness.

my son went into nursery at 9 mths was the best thing for him, i don't agree with all day 5 days a week he went for only a few hrs for 2 days a week, he became a very out going boy not a clingy baby socialised easy and interacted with other children as the years go on you see your child blooming and not a shrinking Violet in a corner.

The best age is to put a child in daycare is when that child can talk, having said that is because what if the teachers in that class hit your baby they cant tell you but a 3year old can my daughter speaks very well to be 3 so at that age is when I would put her in daycare because she tells everything

my son is now 22 months and he started nursery when he was 18 months, i tried to wait as long as i could so that i could explain why he was going to be spending time there, and he would be old enough to understand!
18 months is a good age for them to be interacting with other kids as well!!
