You can begin handling them more at about 3 weeks, but they can't toerate too much handking, until they are about 5 weeks old..
However, you should pick them up for just a minute or two, a few times every day..Check them over for any problems, and put them back..

Right now I'm helping care for 5 female puppies no more than a week old. They need human care and feeding because the owner of the puppies' mother took her newborn puppies to the vet to have them put down because she didn't want them. The vet refused and decided to keep the puppies. They contacted my family and we're caring for them until they're old enough to be adopted. I feed them every three hours, meaning at less than a week old, I'm handling them and playing with them about 8 times a day. Just be very gentle and make sure your hands are CLEAN. Watch out though.. new born puppies do the bathroom where ever and whenever they please.. especially on your shirt. :X

They are needing a lot of sleep, rest and mommy time right now. You CAN handle them, but too much is not good. It also can be stressful to the mom- which could affect milk production. I agree with the previous answer about checking them over a few times a day and putting them back. Believe me, they will want to play more than you will in a few more weeks!!

Will the mom let you pick them up? Is this her first?

If this is her first batch she is going to be like any first time mother. She may move the pups if you want to play with them? It really depends on your relationship with the mother.

Long while ago I let one of my cow dog (Australian Shepherds) have pups. I got to play with them as soon as she had them. She would not let anyone else around them.

It is good for pups to be loved as soon as mom feels comfy with you being near them and handling them.

Olden days pups were not messed with, I feel this was maybe due to dogs being a commodity not a pet (dogs can not work for some reason it is shot). Around where we live this is still true to some......

When she is ready get her spayed, unless of course she is having working pups, or pups that are enhancing her breed. Who wants to be a backyard breeder.....

Good luck with the pups, I bet they are cuties!!

Maybe you can wait until they are ABLE to play????????? For the first few weeks, they sleep and eat.

Remember, they are LIVING things, not put there for your amusement and that of all the people in the neighborhood either!

Around 3 weeks they can be HANDLED. But MAKE SURE that you don't have any clone or perfume on because sometimes the mom rejects them after they smell different.
Good Luck!

Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to start picking them up and cuddle them and put them back. The more touched by humans the better.
