what is your reasoning? Are you basing your prejudice on personal accounts, or media hype and bandwagon stereotyping?

I'd really love to hear from those who dislike/fear pitbull breeds, and why.....

Those of you who dislike/fear them should read their history. They were bred to be non-human aggressive, and those that showed human aggression were killed. They were bred to fight animals, not people.

I love ALL dogs, and would risk my life to help even a pit bull.
but, i would never want another, or trust one.
Perhaps the lineage of pit bulls in our town is more aggressive than others? or not the norm? I was in the vet's office to have stitches removed the other day..and a call came in about a sick pit bull..the vet's assistant told the caller that the doctor doesn't accept pit bull clients...So, then the vet came out to look at my dog, and the assistant told him about the caller..He said, I would like to help all dogs, but if it hadn't been for my steel toed boots, I would have lost my foot to the last pit bull I tried to help..So, never again.
Then, they got to talking about the Chihuahuas that had come in earlier in the day...3 Chihuahuas had been in their own yard, playing with children, when a pit bull climbed the fence and killed one and injured the other 2 , one of them died at the vet's..the 3rd one was still in ICU.

I have several local friends who have been attacked by their own pit bulls...None of them were bad owners..but the dogs just 'snapped' and attacked...so, I wonder...Could it be that our pit bulls are just worse than those in other areas? This is a very nice resort community, not a slum..

I believe many of the stories about pit bull attacks are very real, and I am sure very frightening, however- pit bulls did not make the list in our city as a prominent biter. Guess who did? Everybody's favorite Labrador Retriever! The next on the list- German Shepards. Rottweilers and Pit Bulls made up less than 2% of all reported dog bites in 1 year.
The breed has been badly contaminated through poor breeding practices, and I do not doubt for 1 minute that something in their brain is not functioning correctly. I don't care WHO owns the dog- if it's bred poorly- ANY dog is susceptible to behavioral and health issues.
I do not believe in BSL the way it is now- but BREEDER SPECIFIC Legislation.

Personally I have nothing against pit bulls. A pit bull is no more likely to attack a person or another animal than any other dog. Most dog bites are not from pit bulls. The problem is that when a chihuahua or a toy poodle bites a person they don't do as much damage as a pit bull can. When a powerful breed like a pit bull or a rottweiler does bite they can do a lot of damage. That gives them a bad reputation. I'm not saying that everyone should go out and buy a pit bull either. A powerful breed like that should only be kept by a person who is able to control them. If you can't handle a dog that is stronger than you. You shouldn't have a pit bull.

I also have seen too many come through the shelter that have "snapped" and attacked either a person or another dog. That is why the media keep getting on them. I am sure most of them have been brought up by people that should not even have a dog, let alone a pit, but others were owned by good people who thought like you and thought it would be OK because they had it since it was a puppy. They are a breed that should be owned by very few people, but are actually owned by MANY.

I love all animals. I love pitbulls. Some bad owners do not train them to be friendly. So I believe the ones that are aggressive should be uthenized but NOT THE ENTIRE BREED! Many pitbulls are friendly because of good owners who TRAIN them correctly. Pitbulls can be a wonderful part of your family if they get basic obedience training. Those that dont can be a danger. That is why they are feared by some people (rightfully so). So, learn the responsibilities of proper ownership of the dog breed BEFORE you get the dog!

Pitbulls are solid canines in the journey that they have got the right vendors. the project is that human beings take care of them like they seem to be a Lab or a Golden Retriever. they are severe skill, solid and athletic. they are in basic terms undeniable effective. they are an fairly dominant, headstrong breed, so training them isn't as basic as training a Lab. If someone doesn't comprehend a thanks to attend to a breed like this, the dogs is left untrained. Then the dogs does what any untrained dogs might want to do: ruin fixtures, chew human beings, get out of the backyard and wrestle with different canines or attack human beings. the version is that pitbulls are a lot extra able to wounding someone. they are also a lot extra sturdy to coach. So are they undesirable canines? No, yet human beings opt to carry close that in basic terms because you are able to prepare a Golden Retriever, it doesn't advise that you'll prepare a pitbull.

I found an abandoned puppy last Christmas. I thought it was a black labrador puppy but as it began to grow...guess what? It turned out to be a pitbull. Prior to this I always said I would never own a pit because of all the things that I heard. Well I was ignorant as most of you are now. This dog is so loving and I know it would never hurt anyone. I think its in how you raise them. I treat mine like a little family member instead of just a dog. I have also had and trained rotties with absolutely no problems. They have to be trained and loved and given attention. Not just pet them once in a while and throw them so food and forget them. Ive read everything I could find concerning pitts and statistics say that more human parents kill thier own children than a pittbull killing children. Some of you people need to stop being ignorant and get the facts straight. Responsible owners have well behaved dogs.

I will admit that I have never had an unpleasant encounter with a pit-bull.

A client of ours brought her pit-bull puppy to the shop and I pet it without realizing it was a pit-bull at first. Then it looked at me and I recognzed it as a pit-bull and got a nice shot of adrenalin. The dog never misbehaved though.

I do believe the media over-hypes pit-bull attacks. I work in aviation so I understand how much damage the media can do. But the facts are there, they do attack. No media can create that out of thin air. You cannot control their environment enough to guarrantee they won't snap.

I have compassion for animals, but my childrens' saftey trumps that by about a billion times. I would not hesitate to kill or disable an animal that is attacking my child-regardless of the consequences.

No one has ever said ALL pitbulls are vicious, but they have an uncanny knack of mauling or killing people. I've been bitten by dogs that don't bite, so the owner doesn't even know his own dog. How many golden retrievers have actually killed someone? I opt on the caution side because of children, neighbors, strangers, or even other dogs. I always have owned a known, friendly, and gentle dog, why take chances?

I love to see them from far but not up close. Sorry my neighbors pitbull tried to attack my puppie so they kind of scare the **** out of me. Excuse my french! Like any dog were bred to be mens best friend is not the dogs fault what breed they are its the ignorant owners who train them to be mean fighting machines. Like any dog if you show nothing but care and love it will love humans back. If you train it to attack of course it will attack at the first site of human. Unfourtainly most pitbulls are owned by poor ghetto people who train them to be guard dogs a.k.a back yard dogs who are chained up so they arent very social.
