It begins the download process but then encounters an "internal error" and stops.

Irrelevant whether you are using genuine windows or a copy. Either way it should setup if your cd is not scratched or faulty. And if your CD drive is not faulty. Are you booting from the CD? That is better than starting setup from within windows.

One possibility, if it is an SP1 version of XP pro but has been upgraded to SP2 by the MS updates downloads, then the original disk will not replace your operating system because it believes that it would be overwriting newer files. In that case you have to delete your updates vie the control panel add/remove then the cd will install and you download the updates from MS when you next connect to the internet.

are you using genuine version of windows? If yes. then back up your data and re-install the OS.
