Hi There.
Let me put it the best way i can. I dont have a detailed knowledge but i am clued up to technology.
Plasma TV's - Brighter and higher contrast than LCD televisions but require gas cartridges to 'excite' the pixels on screen meaning that depending on usage the cartridges need to be re-filled every 2-5 years. Which costs £££'s.
LCD TV's - Older technology, came before plasmas. Not as bright and less colour saturation than a Plasma TV but they dont use gas cylinders, hence no refil and the life of the TV is twice as good. LCD is also an acronym for 'Liquid Crystal Display'
HDTV - High Definition TV. The pixels are much smaller than the previous 2 technologies meaning more of them and 'higher definiton/quality'. Colour saturation and brightness is truely amazing and matches traditional CRT TV's. Can be viewed from any angle or position with no problems unlike the others but more pixels = more power consumption so they wont be as energy efficient, not for a couple of years. Also you need a special subscription to Sky HD. The set-top box is in the region of £2-300 plus a £10 PM fee to recieve HD signals. However the TV will work just as well with the HD Subscription, you just wont get the same picture clarity.
If your on a budget, buy an LCD. Definately a more long term investment.
If money is no issue then HD is your answer. It is future proof and can make full use of emerging new technologies such as Blu-Ray - a 2nd generation of higher quality DVD.
Hope this answers your question.

depends on what you're looking for.
there are HD LCD rear projections, HD LCD Flatpanels.
HD Plasmas
and HD CRT's (tube tv in HD)
in my opinion , HD LCD flatpanels have the highest quality picture. compared to plasmas there is no glare , and plasmas dim as years go by. also most plasmas do not support 1080i or 1080p as most LCD's do.
The CRT's are ok , but bulky and very heavy.
HD LCD rear projection are nice , but the picture is a little dimmer than a LCD flatpanel and the picture fades a little from the side.
You can also consider a DLP tv (rear projection type). They do support HD 1080i and 1080p , but look a little grainy. hope this helps you out.

There is allot of difference between them, I chose an LCD because of the price. I found an article in Popular Science that explained it into detail to help solve many questions to help you make a decision.
