How well do you think one or two persons can survive with 400-500 euros a month in Bangkok, with apartment already paid.

How much travelling could one do with this kind of budget? Any chances to travel to Malaysia or Laos?

Thanks!

Hi, you should be pretty comfortable, considering that that amount is above the normal wage-earner income there. One way is to live like them, eating at local food stalls, buying at the flea markets all over town, etc. You can actually get on by quite handsomely.

As for travelling, do as the locals do, take the bus. It is cheap, just a bit time consuming. You find that it do not take much to make a trip outside Bangkok, even to Malaysia and Cambodia or Laos. You just have to find out where to take the transport. There are different bus terminals to take the buses from.

Check www.lonelyplanet.com for additional transport info. You should be able to have a good time too.

I support a family of four on about 600 euros a month. I don't live inBangkok, but I do live in Chonburi, which is pretty expensive. You can definitely survive and thrive on that much money, if you budget well and live a semi-Thai lifestyle- eating Thai food, not buying fancy stuff, etc. Travel in SE Asia is very cheap. Trains, busses, and even airplanes are cheap. There are cheap hotels all over Laos, Cambodia, and Viet Nam.

One person could survive in Bangok on that, but it would be very tight.
If you travel by bus to Laos and Malaysia, then you will find some places much cheaper than Bangkok, and will have enough.

One person can be ok with 500 a month, but the further you go from the capital, the cheaper it gets. Book on Air Asia in advance and you can fly all over Asia for almost nothing, even to the wonderful Philippines.
Have a look at this site for an idea of how beautiful the islands are over here!!!

having been to bangkok a few times, I can say yes you can survive, however you need to be able to be thai not a tourist. generally what you are talking about is possible if you find a good thai guide who can take you around on the cheap. or at the very least point you in the right direction. being a tourist remember that you will always pay a premium for EVERYTHING, I suggest you learn to speak thai very quickly if you intend to make it work.

anyway good luck

cheers

Oh yea, I agree with 'qldtravelguru' on the part of speaking Thai to NOT to pay that much on stuff.

That said, 500 euros would be almost 24000 baht. And if you ration it for ONE person on daily basis = 800 a day.

Not bad at all IF you consider:

1) A cab ride around town is normally less than 100 baht (NO JAM, on METERED FARE & you DO NOT ask how much it is before hand)

2) A local meal costs less than 100 baht (assuming you eat double portions of the local stuff)

3) You are not tempted by the AWESOME shopping bargains around town...

So enjoy, yeah?

(oh, and if you are accosted by some lady boy? Please do not be tempted to spend what is left of the 800 baht on him/her ok?)

No Pun Intended, dai mai?

I think you would have trouble surviving on that amount of money as Bangkok is dearer than most other areas of Thailand. Perhaps if you ate in the cheapest of place you might scrape by.

You certainly could do little travel on that money.

One tip: eat street food. It is extremely cheap, very good and generally quite safe. You can get pad thai, som tam, etc. for about 50 euro cents. That will save you a lot of money.

I have lived here for 3 years, eat street food everyday, and have never had a major stomach ailment from it.

Its easy to live for that much money. Me and my wife and one son live good for around 300 Euro, and have to pay appartment also.
But you can always try live the Thai style way......buy food at the small food stalls around. Price around 1 Euro per meal.
