i have the same problem, i found that hard manual labor during the day wore me out and now i sleep all night, nor more waking up at 3:30am then getting up at 5:30am for work, now i just sleep till 5:30am and get up with my alarm
also stop drinking a glass of water before bed, eating within 5 or 6 hours before bed, smoking ciggarettes 1 hour before bed. also try meditating yourself to sleep, sometimes it helps you get to the rem stage sooner and it lasts longer

Several factors could account for this situation. What seems to waken you? You don't mention your age, nor anything to guide ones thoughts to come up with a solution. I only sleep 4-5 hours a night and find nothing out of the ordinary. Is how important age becomes in making any informed conclusions.

I would suggest you look at the positive side. Feel more comfortable with the fact, you are able to go back to sleep.

See if you can get your doctor to prescribe Sonata for you. It worked wonders for me. Sonata is like Ambien, but for people who fall asleep but then wake up a couple of hours later, like you (and me). It only lasts a few hours in your system, so even if you take it at 3 a.m., you'll feel fine (not groggy or zoned out) by 7 a.m.

I try to avoid caffeine after a certain time and I try to go to bed by a certain time and get up a certain time. Getting your body clock into a routine helps.

If your still not sleeping, I would suggest you see your doctor, they may be able to prescribe something.

new medications such as ambien or lunesta may help. Over-the-counter sleep aids (Tylenol pm,etc) are nothing more than benadryl. There are older anti-depressants such as trazedone that may work for you. see a general practitioner or psychiatrist
