I'm not a professional, but I know from experience that lighter hair colors contain a lot more peroxide because they have to bleach your hair out and put the color in so that the lighter color works on your hair. Darker colors have very little peroxide because they don't have to bleach your hair out as much to cover the original color. My hair has always been way drier and crunchier after using lighter colors than when I dye it black (my natural color.)
I just got some Natural Match color (the one with Penelope Cruz on the commercials) and it says it has no ammonia (stinky, opens up hair cuticle so the color penetrates the hair shaft.) It's supposed to cause less damage, but it only works within a certain hair color range because I guess it doesn't have peroxide in it or it doesn't have much or...I don't know. I just want my hair to be like Penelope Cruz's...not gonna happen, but I can dream, right?
Yeah, darker is nicer to your hair. If you're concerned about damage, try some highlights--not as much hair involved, less overall damage.

No - the color you put on doesn't make a difference. You are correct what ever chemicals are in the dye will cause damage, but there are shampoos & conditioners that are better to use if you color your hair. If you are planning on doing this your self rather than at a hair solan, be very careful. If you leave it in too long you'll end up with a color you don't want. If that happens, do not try to strip the color out yourself. Go to an experienced hair dresser.

Every chemical damages you hair. However, there are many brands that offer temporary dye that have no amonia. But these colors only last like a week or two. But they dont damage so I reccomend temp dye.

Any time you add permanent color, you are doing some damage--even if it's not visible. Why not try a semi-permanent? They are very low peroxide and ammonia-free. The color gradually fades after a month of shampooing. There are no visible roots and it doesn't alter your natural color under the dye.

Your hair gets broken the two way, yet once you dye it a lighter colour, reckoning on your organic colour, you may desire to bleach your hair till now utilising the colour and that's what reasons terrible injury, darker colour on the different hand, shows greater effective on your hair even without bleaching it

FALSE! I died my hair darker once and when the color faded it had even stripped the color of my natural hair, so that when my roots grew in they were even darker than what I had died my hair.

no...it's safer, because lightening requires bleach, but it's still damaging to dye your hair...it's best to wait three to four months between colorings, and six to eight months between bleachings.

you'll damage it less, but it will still damage it whether just after dying it or in the long run.
